Three weary travelers walk into a motel and ask for three rooms. The attendant informs them that they are full and only have one room available. The three travelers discuss it, and decide that they can share the room for the night and agree to take it. The attendant tells them that the cost for the night is $30. Each traveler puts $10 on the counter, and the attendant gives them the key to the last room in the motel.
A short while after, the attendant realizes that he overcharged the travelers, and should have charged them $25. He gives the bellhop five $1 bills and tells him to take the money to the new guests and pass along his apologies.
As the bellhop is walking to the room, he decides that since the guests didn't know how much extra they paid, he would keep $2 for himself. Once he gets to the room, he gives the guest the $3 and passes on the front desk attendants apologies.
Each traveler gets $1.
The math
If each guest initially paid $10 for the room (3 guests times $10 each = $30), and each guest got $1 back (3 guests times $9 = $27) and the bellhop kept $2 for himself, where is the extra dollar?
Each guest paid $9 ($9 x 3) = $27
Bellhop kept $2 + $ 2
Total $29
