After losing his starting quarterback job, Garrett Gilbert has been permanently shelved.

Texas announced Tuesday morning that the junior signal-caller underwent successful shoulder surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2011 season Gilbert underwent an MRI last week that revealed damage in his right shoulder, an injury that occurred in the team's season opener against Rice.

“My shoulder was getting progressively worse and when the doctors did an MRI last week, their recommendation was for me to get it fixed,” Gilbert said. “That’s why I decided to have the surgery now, so I can get it taken care of, start my rehab and be healthy and ready to go for next year.

"I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to play the rest of this year, but I’ll be out there helping (co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks) coach (Bryan) Harsin and the quarterbacks as much as I can.”

Gilbert can apply for a medical waiver to gain another year of eligibility because he played in less than 20 percent of UT's games this season.

Before the injury, he had fallen to third on the depth chart behind sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash.

Ahhh...so his shoulder was the problem for the 2009 NC game and that 5-7 2010 season.

tough for the kid, but I don't think he was going to play regardless of his injury.

He can still carry the clipboard with his other arm, right?

He is never getting back on the field unless Ash and Second McCoy both go down, and I imagine they might go with a transfer/froshie before they go back GG.

I really hope we rearrange mccoy and shipleys face when we play them. Especially mccoy's. That is all.

McCoy Lite is pretty small. I honestly fear for him when we play in a little over 3 weeks. It'll be a long day for him or maybe even short if we get to him early. He is frail.

I'll answer that one for Chris... He's having shoulder surgery.

Almost sounds like something Mack orchestrated to save face for Chris (Gilbert). By the way if we re-arrange McCoy's face maybe we can make it symmetrical and do him a favor.

Seems like a ploy to get the kid a medical redshirt so he can transfer to a 1-AA school and have two years to play. He is one of the worst division 1 starting quarterbacks I've ever seen.

I'm definitely smelling some type of spin coming off this announcement. Remember Sherrod Harris "concentrating on academics"?

In case none of you read the fabulous backstory, this is required reading. It is especially required for an UT recruits.

Speaking of the Nutter, here is that thing that Bammer site always does when it witnesses meltdowns on fan boards:

it wont matter who's taking the snaps. much pain will be dealt out that day. i really think a few of the whorns are gonna be carried off the field. they are soft and small. i just hope they come in undefeated and full of confidence.

Well maybe they shouldn't start a quarterback that looks like Two-Face from Batman. The jokes make themselves.

They were saying the same thing about Colt McCoy, that he was too undersized. Lo and behold, Colt played and started continuously through pain and adversity till 45 wins as a starting quarterback later, he brought that crystal ball home to the Bevos.

Oh wait...

Can he get a medical RS, transfer and save a year?

Herr Scholz
9/20/2011, 05:10 PM
Smart move on Gilbert's part. He's not going to see the field again at UT and this way he can transfer and still have 2 years of eligibility left somewhere else (assuming he gets a medical hardship this year which he should because he only played 5 quarters this season before the season ending surgery).

The question now is whether Harsin will still rotate McCoy and Ash seeing as how we're down to 2 QBs or if Ash becomes more of a traditional backup out of necessity.

Read a rumor that Gilbert was thinking about transferring to Princeton.

So Greg is gone, GG is gone, Cleve is gone and you have Major and Boise in charge of your offense now. So that means there's NO excuses left and you're going undefeated and gonna beat Bammer in the nat'l title game this time, right? Assuming quarterback McCoy doesn't go down in the title game, of course?

Herr Scholz

Not this year. 8 or 9 wins would be nice.

The Holiday Bowl misses you and the Pac 12 wants you, Herr. Join the dark side with us. Give up your network and journey to the west coast for more than just a bowl game and occasional UCLA fight fight fight!

I'm all for the move West. Make TLN a regional PAC network and be done with it. Sounds fine to me. Would love all the new destinations.

How he fares against you aside, I was surprised to learn he is bigger than Colt.

The MNC game isn't on Garrett. Two of the interceptions were well thrown passes that bounced right off of Texas players, and he also had a perfectly-thrown TD pass go right through a receiver's hands.

This is actually a lucky break for Texas. The eyes don't lie... Ash or McCoy is a better option anyway.
