Between 10:30 and 11:30 this morning, 5 OU Piper Cherokees took off, flew about 12 minutes, then landed again.

Did students need flight time in the rain or something? If so, they had to wait a looooong time.

just doing a lap or two in the pattern. Probably just using this as a opportunity to show the primary students some actual IMC but staying in the pattern. They typically get simulated instrument time by flying under the hood or foggles.

To add to that, primary flight training requires at least 3.0 hours in simulated or actual instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). Most of the time you don't get much actual IMC during primary; I think I ended up with about 0.6 hours of actual and 2.5 of simulated IMC. You don't really learn to do anything other than keep it straight and level or perform a standard rate 180 degree turn. The purpose is so that you can get out of IMC in case you fly into it, nothing more.

Flight aware typically makes entries for IFR aircraft. Looking at some of those 12 minute flights it quite possible they were either departing or arriving to KOUN under an IFR clearance. We’ll do this sometime when the weather at the home airport is IFR but 10 miles away its VFR. We’ll take off IFR and once VFR will cancel the IFR clearance. Flight Aware will show a short 10 -15 min flight for us under those cases.

Has anyone tracked any planes leaving Waco for Providence or vice versa? No? Are you sure? Oh God...

So it's possible that a squadron of Pipers took off, carrying the Pride, headed to Tallahassee?
