View Full Version : Under Bob Stoops the Sooners have never won a road game against...

a ranked non-conference opponent.

This is a stat that I have heard a lot recently from a lot of people here in Florida. The only stat that matters to me is Bob Stoops is 2-0 against FSU.

But it got me thinking, what games have we played on the road, against non-conference ranked opponents? There can't be many.

well how many times have we played a ranked "Non-Conference" opponent on the road?

Twice that I can think of. Once against Oregon in a game in which we were robbed, and once against Miami when we lost by one point without Sam Bradford.

ND may have been ranked in 1999 as well, when we choked away that game.

so let's just say 0-3.

not enough evidence to be an actual good stat. lol

Wasn't Alabama ranked when we played them in Tuscaloosa? And we won that game!

UCLA, Miami, and depending on how you count it, BYU finished ranked, so 0-2, in my estimation. If you use rakning at the time, add Oregon. I think UCLA was unranked at the time.

Tell them this:

Under Bob Stoops, OU has never lost to Florida State.

Well, OU plays in a pretty hefty number of neutral site and bowl games, and I guess if you take those out of the equation...

And for some reason conference games on the road mean less than non-conference games on the road...

You end up with a pretty narrow definition of something that looks bad for OU, certainly.

It's kind of a sh!tty stat, considering that only 25 teams finished ranked each year, amirite?

I mean, what if we beat Florida State so badly that they lose most of the rest of their games? Does that make Florida State a sh!tty non-conference road game? :D

Also, I just did some numbers for the ACC as a whole, including those teams before they joined.

OU is 29-6 against the ENTIRE ACC. 4 of those losses were Miami, so against the rest, OU is an astounding 26-2.

Under Coach Stoops, Oklahoma has been undefeated on the road in the 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011 seasons.

Why does the "Non-Conference" part of it matter? Beating a ranked team on the road is beating a ranked team on the road, regardless of their conference.

You can generally make a statistic say whatever you want if you pick out th right parameters.

OU beat Oregon on the road in '06. I was there. They recovered the ball, and all they had to do was take a knee before they were *** raped by the refs. Still a win.

Doesnt worry me. The media is hyping Florida St so much this year its sickening. Even with NFL ready Ponder we still stomped them. What makes anyone think they are going to beat us? I think we need to put thier trash tallking loud mouthing faces in the dirt and settle this on the field...

What is FSU's nonconference ranked opponent home record?

The Maestro
9/13/2011, 11:11 AM
Bob Stoops two best road wins. Last year at OSU and at KSU in 2000. We can't help a lot of the teams we beat on the road didn't end up ranked. We only contributed to one loss for them.

Even so, last year's win at OSU did not have national title implications. This would be his biggest road win since 2000 at KSU. I sure hope we start that hot as well. Hoping Josh coaches like he played...many times in his career we jumped on teams early.

If you take away the hundred or so weeks OU has been ranked #1 then OU has never ever been #1. Gosh that would be terrible. We would probably have to wear orange.

You know what? OU has also never won a game in Tallahassee! (They're 0-0 there....)

Amazing how stats compiled of minimal instances are so heavily depended on in college football.

Remind the F$U fans that the Orange Bowl is a helluva lot close to Tallahassee than it is to Norman, and we didn't have too much of a problem with them in that game.

Soonerstats.com reveals that we've only played 2 such games (if you're counting the ranking at the time of the game). Oregon and Miami.

Only games that fit that narrow definition:
L #18 Oregon '06
L #17 Miami '09

However, I tend to think any 'neutral' site game is still a road game, right?

W vs. #2 FSU (2000 Orange Bowl)
W vs. #7 Wash St (2003 Rose Bowl)
W vs. #6 Oregon (2005 Holiday Bowl)
W vs. #21 Stanford (2009 Sun Bowl)

I'll bet FSU has never won a road game against a ranked non-conference opponent under Jimbo either.:fat:

And from the looks of it, with their narrow definition, they've only played on less such game than OU.

It was OU.. last year. They lost 47-17

I'll bet we've scored more points on ranked out of conference opponents then they have.
And I'll bet they've given up more points per game than we have too.

I like cherry-picking stats. :)
