SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2011) — Lee Roy Selmon football hero and great humanitarian, will be buried back in Oklahoma City. But plans have been made in Tampa, Florida, to allow his friends and fans a chance to say goodbye to a man who touched many.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. at Exciting Central Tampa Baptist Church, 2923 N. Tampa St. The Selmon family will be present from 5-7 p.m. Since they are anticipating a large crowd, Selmon’s family said they might start at 4 p.m.
Funeral services for Selmon will be held Friday, at Idlewild Baptist Church, 1837 N. Dale Mabry Hwy., in Lutz, Florida, starting at 10 a.m. Selmon will be flown to Oklahoma City, and a second service will be held on Saturday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 6400 S. Sooner Road, in Oklahoma City. Selmon will be buried in Trice Hill Cemetery, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Selmon, 56, died on Sept. 4, 2011, two days after suffering a stroke in his home. He regained conscious Saturday and spent his final days with his family and friends close to his bedside. Doctors believe he died due to complications of the stroke he suffered on Sept. 2, 2011.
Selmon was born October 20, 1954 to the late Jesse and Lucious Selmon in Eufaula, Oklahoma as the youngest of nine siblings. He attended the University of Oklahoma from 1972 to 1976. He moved to Tampa, FL in 1976 as a first draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and dedicated 35 years to the Tampa Bay Community.
Selmon is survived by his wife Claybra, his daughter Brandy, and sons Lee Roy Jr. and Christopher. Selmon also is survived by 3 sisters, 5 brothers, and other relatives. His two most influential brothers that he attended college and played football together are Lucious and Dewey.
Through the efforts of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the USF Bulls, and the Tampa Sports Authority, a space has been designated at the Raymond James Stadium to allow fans a temporary memorial for Selmon.
The Buccaneers and USF will honor Selmon at home games this weekend, both to be played at Raymond James Stadium. However, details have yet to be released.
The USF Bulls wore Selmon’s #63 on the back of their helmets Saturday during their 23-20 victory over Notre Dame.
USF plays Ball State on Saturday at 6 p.m., and the Bucs open their season against the Detroit Lions at noon on Sunday.
The Selmon family has asked that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Selmon's memory should consider making donations to Abe Brown Ministries in Tampa by calling 813-247-3285, or the University of South Florida Foundation Partnership for Athletics, by calling 813-974-2125.
