Is it ok to wear a lighter colored suit to an interview or stick with a darker colored one?

It is my opinion that it is better to be over dressed than under dressed. I usually suggest that people try to match their wardrobe to the general attire of those working there. Ask the person scheduling the interview what the general attire is and go with that.

Yes. Seasonally appropriate.

Something like this.

Get a haircut. Seriously. Be clean shaven. Shower. Makeup, deodorant. Shoes that don't have mud encrusted to them.

All just as important as what clothes to wear

All just as important as what clothes to wearThis. I think it depends on where you are interviewing and what type of job it is. I would think a shirt and tie would be sufficient.

It depends on the market, in most professions here in Austin wearing a suit is a sign that you're from somewhere else. I found that out on my first interview here in 2003 and haven't put one on since. The only people that wear suits seem to be politicians, news anchors or sales clerks at the mall. The (patent) lawyers down the hall from me dress slightly better than the software guys in the two floors up. Most of the law firm wears jeans, untucked knits and tennis shoes, the software guys are shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops. I wear jeans and a knit, my interview wear was chinos and a short sleeved button down shirt (it was summer), that is pretty much dressing up here.

When I practiced law, my clients would ask what they should wear to a jury trial. I told them if they normally wear a coat and tie, do so. If not, wear casual slacks and a clean pressed shirt. You do not want to look nervous and restless. People who do not generally wear a suit, tend to look uncomfortable in one.

If you are very light skinned, wear a darker suit. It makes you look less pale and washed out.

Shoe polish is your friend. If your shoes look like you have neglected them, it sends the message that you may neglect other details.

A first-stage interview is not the place to impress with your individual style. If it's an office job where suits are the norm, black or charcoal suit, solid tie, white shirt, black shoes and belt. Albq is right on with the shoe shine, particularly if a woman is interviewing you. Ask questions that let the interviewer know that you're looking at this as a long-term commitment on your part.

If your shoes are properly shined, you can angle them for upskirt peaks.

Or so I heard. I'd test it myself, but my vans aren't exactly shinney.

Oh and wear a tie with it, just not a bow tie.

Go to a reputable men's wear store, find an old guy that has worked there for ever, and tell him you want an interview suit.

Something nice that will make a good impression, but not upstage you.

Wore the tried at true charcoal suit and it worked. Expect to get the offer soon. Thanks for the help guys.
