Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday during his weekly press conference he still doesn’t have a resolution on the status of defensive end Ronnell Lewis, though he does “hope to” know something before Saturday’s season-opener against Tulsa.

The No. 1-ranked Sooners host TU on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

Lewis’ status has been uncertain since training camp began on Aug. 3, but Stoops has declined to clarify whether Lewis’ eligibility is related to academics or NCAA problems or both or neither.

“It’s just not fair to him,” Stoops said. “He deserves some privacy, doesn’t he?”

If they dont know before kick, they can't run the risk of playing him. You'd think the NCAA would be sensative to the timeline and get a decision made.

yeah i was just wondering that - if they dont get a ruling before kickoff - can they play him or would the run the risk of having to forfeit that game if he were later ruled ineligible?

If the NCAA cared about the individual athlete. Unfortunately, the past has shown otherwise.

Sucks for Ronnell. I would think they wouldn't play him (if they don't have a ruling by Saturday) so not to risk any issues with the NCAA.

Stoops has hinted, in my opinion, that's it some kind of personal matter. What that can I be, I have no clue. It's clearly an issue for somebody to hang him up for what seems forever. Brings back memories of Mike Balogun.

NCAA: You gave him a nickname.
Stoops: The Hammer.
NCAA: That is an impermissible benefit.
Stoops: Wtf...
NCAA: You cannot give student-athletes things that regular students do not have access to.
Stoops:
NCAA: Ineligible!

I heard it was related to the fact that he made up a class and passed. However, he didn't go to class. Sooo it's a hang up as to whether that professor will actually clear him as passing.

Could be complete BS but thats what I've heard from the scuttlebutt on campus.

how exactly do you know he doesn't have his priorities straightened out? you don't know anything about his situation. i highly doubt he would still be on top of the depth chart if he needed his "priorities straightened out"

i sat next to some of his family at the red/white game. he has 2 small children... not sure if that has anything at all to do with his playing status but my point is, nobody knows what's going on with him right now so to say anything otherwise is putting your foot in your mouth.

This not the first time Ronnell has had grade/personal issues during his time here. OBVIOUSLY, he still needs to figure some stuff out.

After watching the press conference yesterday, I'd be afraid that if Bob reads this thread and hears you making assumptions about Ronnell's personal issues, that he may personally track you down and punch you in the face.

That brings up a serious thought... Bobby Stoops vs Chuck Norris.. who wins?

I thought the clearinghouse looked at every player every year. If not what is the "progress toward a degree" qualification to remain eligible year to year?

I really don't know how all of that works. I never got that far into the process. It took Barry Switzer about 3 seconds to chuckle when evaluating me at a summer camp in the 1970's. I wasn't offered :(

that's a problem....I have kids, 2, but I am 47....1 ya could claim as a mistake (not the actual children, but getting pregnant) but 2?...wrap it or don't do it...2 kids and going to school, playing d1 football doesn't seen like a good deal....course that is coming from my perspective...of living with the mom and helping raise the kids..which I doubt he is doing.

# as a disclaimer...NOT bashing him personally...but his situation is not ideal.

"It's not fair to him. He deserves some privacy, doesn't he?" Stoops said. "OK, so you're asking me to talk about grades and this that and the other, and he's a college student. If he was in the NFL, I would talk about whatever it is. He's not. He's a student on top of being a player. He deserves to have that. So as many times as you ask, that will be the answer."

And that is why OU players will dive onto a hand grenade through a hail of bullets for Bob Stoops. Hell, after reading that, I might too. I mean...if anyone was throwing hand grenades at Bob Stoops while he happened to be in east Knoxville...
