OK, when Maria and I first got married back in the 90s her grandma came to stay with us for 6 weeks in order to take an English class. She lived in the gold country foothills where they didn't have English classes for adults at that time. She was trying to improve her English enough to become a U.S. citizen. She didn't come to the U.S. until she was in her late 40's. Her husband had worked as a bracero in his younger days, but had long since died.

She did not qualify for citizenship because, even after taking the class, her English skills were insufficient.

So today, almost 20 years later, at age 84, she finally became a U.S. citizen. She took the oath in Sacramento today, along with 1600 other new citizens.

Tell Grandma the U.S. is a better place today because she is a citizen.

Super!! It's a great thing to see your loved ones become citizens: People should marry aliens just to see how cool it is. Not least because it means no more dealing with the INS / DHS !!

P.J. O'Rourke had it about right when he made the comment that he'd far rather have people who had made an effort to be Americans be his fellow citizens than some of those native born citizens he sees at Walmart on a given day.

Congrats to Grandma!

Northern California is one place where the positive impact of new Mexican-American citizenry is not given enough credit. (I presume Grandma is..er, was Mexican?) Many community leaders in NorCal and a great deal of our Armed Forces from there are just a generation or two from their own "Grandma"s.

Congratulations to a lovely new American.

(EDIT: When I say "Northern" I mean any part north of Merced...I can't speak for the other part of the state.)

Congratulations to Maria's Grandma! Next, you need to take her to register to vote!

They had voter registration tables set up at the ceremony - so she's already registered to vote.

This is going to turn political...

I'm going to be the ******* who opposes her citizenship.

Sorry, I just cannot congratulate this.

then you should've just kept your mouth shut and not posted in the thread. Not the time or the place.

That likely would have been the classy thing to do.

If she followed the rules, then what's not to like? If you're not 100% tribal, then you immigrated here sometime.

Congrats to Grandma!
Althought I do believe in a formal path to citizenship - that one was waaaayyyyy too long.

This is the absolute core of what being "American" is. I'm German/Jew/English/Irish/******/Dog. I have the utmost respect for those that achieve/realize their citizenship the proper way. God bless this woman, and Sicem, put a sock in your racist horse****.

Especially with how much you turn into a whiny titty baby when anyone calls you out. I like you Sic'em, but learn to keep your mouth shut.

Congrats to her!
