I'm on a conference call with our offices in Parsippany, NJ. They felt it there and evacuated the building for a spell.

5.5 quake in southern Colorado and 5.8 quake in Virginia just now. What the hell is going on???

My only quake experience was the 1991 Landers in California when it read at 7.4.

evacuated buildings for a 5.8?

Heaven help them if they get a, you know, earthquake or something.

That rocked in Downtown, DC. The floor shook, things fell from the walls, and there was an odd mix of calm and panic. Just when you thought it was over, it kicked into another gear.

Sure, we're not used to it, but few people are.

On the plus side, all the federal workers are headed home.

Yeah. Just for 20 minutes for a quick review of the building. Standard disaster planning procedure.

Seems like overkill for a 5.9 that was 300 miles away doesn't it?

I was thinking that my high school wouldn't evacuate for anything less than a 6.3.

By comparison, the Sendai quake earlier this year, at roughly a 9.0 and this one at roughly 6.0 (conservative on both sides) would have been 1,000 + times greater in terms of amplitude.....And yet no one was thrown into earth orbit and, sans the tsunami, there would have been next to no loss of life.

Also just in: Ronnell had a chili dog for breakfast this morning. Coincidence? I think not.

heh. How hard is it for them to get someone out there with a level? What's with the 'may' business?

2 nuke plants in VA automatically taken off line. I'd bet those clowns were all of a sudden happy to have those coal plants running.

To the left, no doubt...

After the earthquake, Obama was quick to point out it was Bush's Fault...

I've felt two aftershocks between 8 and 8:30 pm. For about 5 seconds, it felt like I was sitting on those old vibrating beds.

We got rocked pretty good in Dover DE. Some of the plaster in my home cracked and stuff fell of the shelves. My dog started barking about a
minute before the quake hit.

I know people like to talk tough about how they can handle bigger natural disasters (blizzards/hurricanes/earthquakes/tornadoes) than other parts of the country but I'll call B.S. on this. If you're on top of a 5.9 earthquake they're evacuating the school.

Maybe you remember 5.9 quakes where you were not right on the epicenter but then you have to consider how the signal is dampened over distance. In the east the dampening is much less. The rarity of noticeable earthquakes and the fact it was felt over such a large distance makes this a story.
