View Full Version : Tulsa's Tower Guy

Has anyone heard about this guy? He climbed a radio tower off of Memorial between 21st and 31st on Thursday, and he's been there since then.

I think I heard they got him some water on Friday, but none after that. That's a long time to be without water in this heat. Especially on top of a tower.

Maybe he's trying to get a job with Clear Channel. From the tower he can do weather reports..."It's hot. Really hot." Maybe some traffic..."Jim it looks like traffic is backed up on 44. At least the part of 44 I can see from here."

There are a lot of different theories as to why he's up there.

They think he might be up there until they release Ronnell Lewis's grades and announce his eligibility.

He could be up there until Texas A&M is accepted by the SEC.

He might be up there until Texas has another winning season.

Originally they thought he was going to be up there until OSU won another conference championship in football, but after talking to him on Friday they re-evaluated his mental status and decided he wasn't that crazy.

I've watched that a few times. I think i saw where they made so much money per foot and can only be up there for so long. There are all sorts of rules and training they do before they go up there. That is an insane job.

They have my utmost respect.

I dont think there is enough money in the world to get me to free climb almost 2000ft up a tower to change a light bulb. Someone has to do it though. You have to have a little Evel Knievel in you to do something that crazy.

I imagine that once they are down from there at the end of the climb, there is a good amount of drinking that goes on.

They have my utmost respect.Dude rode an elevator to 1600' then climbed the last 160'..lots of climbers don't have that luxury. Doesn't matter if your 70' or 1700', your still dead if you fall. I've never heard of time limits, so I don't know what that would be about. My heart go's out to the guy's that climb 800-1000'ers with no elevator. They climb up in the dark and climb down in the dark. If they radio down "yellow rain"...get in your truck and turn on the windshield wipers...if they radio down "brown hail"...get in your truck and drive far away from the base of the tower:D

I guess there are plenty of different towers to climb. I fail to see how one makes another more of a man. If you listen to him in the video he mentions that when they are on the outside of the tower in free climb that OSHA Rules require them to take a break every so often. Now I'm not trained to do that job but I am trained to do some pretty high fall area stuff. I'm sure you could probably contact them though and they will probably tell you that OSHA has indeed gotten involved a lot more in areas that have reported OSHA type reportable injuries. I know that's the case in my area. I'd bet that it's becoming an even more common event in their area as well.

There is always the chance that OSHA isn't involved with every tower climb in America but I'd be glad they were if I was in that business. I'd hate being 2nd on the climb and have some Cowboy slip and take me out because he'd done this 1000 times. I can't imagine having someone drop a tool on my head while I was up there or a part or a tool bag.

Scary work place no matter whether they took an elevator to 1600 or not IMO. Now it's possible that what they do on that particular climb is stuff that maybe OSHA recommends and that their Company agrees with and just wants their folks doing. Maybe be they have written procedures for insurance purposes? Again I have no idea because I don't work core them but they do mention it. I've heard nothing but keep your harness on at all times at my place and even if it doesn't make sense to do it we have guys climbing up our *** when they catch guys following our own rules.

OSHA approves no type of "free climbing" on communication towers. It must all be 100%, at all times...and yes OSHA play's a huge part in this business. The bad thing is, they like to hide and take pictures of people doing things the wrong way and then fine the **** out of the company's....big brother hard at work.

I can relate to that statement as I have worked under those conditions as well as a Time Lapse Photography of a modification job we did once and another where NBC Dateline came out and did a piece on the same Mod. The two different filmings were part of a 2 part series they did on how we were doing things to improve fuel efficiency. It was cool to be a part of but everything was pretty anal for a very long time and I dont think I noticed how much until after we were done with it all.

As you can see in the last photo the police are all over the place down there. I asked an officer, "Just how many of you are down here?" He shrugged and said he had no idea and there were several guys here, there, and everywhere around the tower.

I'd say the closest you can get to the tower is about 150-200 yards. There are some apartments in the area where you can get in the parking lot and get a little close but police have every single access point blocked off going into the COX parking lot.
