Anyone know why these people are rioting? I'm assuming that it's primarily the illegal alien/Muslim communities, but that's probably just because I despise Islam.

From what I read police brutality and youth upset at government spending cuts. I don't think there is a unifying theme.

Yeah that's really the only thing I've seen. Vague.

Soccer thugs. IMO. The nations under class relishes the houligan life style. That and they have no jobs.

I think DD is right, these aren't predominantly Muslim groups. In fact, relatively few are involved, at least from the reports I've seen.

There's no political "cause" here. None. So noboidy needs to look for one. These are the essential rebels without a cause. Young, bored, nihilistic good-for-nothings looking for an excuse to vent their existential angst and get free stuff while "sticking it" to "society" etc. In other words, just nothing better to do with their miserable aimless lives. I'm a staunch Anglophile, but this strain of sociopathy is why Britain is a 3rd rate nation: Too many of its citizens, especially the young ones, are lazy & useless, yet angry & resentlful, living on the dole while doing nothing for themselves or anyone else. My dark & evil side says a few volleys of live ammunition would stop this nonsense in its tracks and probably improve the British gene pool.

TU has it down pretty well. Poor, jobless, ignorant and stupid (which are not the same thing), aimless young people with no hope in life. And they've got no air conditioning in Europe which makes sitting home smoking dope and watching tv an unpleasant option. So they go riot.

Live ammunition, as always, would be a good restorative. As would letting Horse Guards give a shout out to tradition by having a full on lance and sabre heavy cavalry charge into the masse. There's a reason this stuff doesn't go on in Russia.

As dusk fell people were told to get off the streets for their own safety. "Go home, get a takeaway and watch anything that happens on TV," one constable advised. "These are bad people who did this. Kids out of control. When I was young it was all Pacman and board games. Now they're playing Grand Theft Auto and want to live it for themselves."

Of course, what TU said makes a lot more sense.

This.

The rioters appear to be multi-racial, and I fully agree there is no unifying cause. The shooting of the black youth was the catalyst, but the rioting has nothing to do with racial injustice or police brutality. Many of the rioters are lower class white kids.

Ever notice how many lower class British whites look genetically defective? And I don't mean bad teeth because dental issues are a problem for even upper class Engish. I mean mishapen heads, ridges on the forehead, and other signs of bad breeding in East London, Peckham, Hull, and Sheffield.

Gang "youts" rioting because they are thugs and looters under the pretext of protesting a police fatal shooting of a "home-girl" in their "hood". Don't know why she was shot and actually surprised because I didn't believe Bobbies were armed. The neighborhood in question was extremely bad and perhaps the Bobbies in this beat carried guns.

Not really. But a man can dream, can't he? It's one of those deals where you couldn't order something like that as a police commander. ON the other hand, you really wouldn't break too much of a sweat investigating if some of your officers were to take a brisk excursion over the line.

It all depends on the soundtrack. Some nice swelling strings definitely make it more fashionable. If you then add in the fact that the folks doin' the dying are of the 'at your feet or at your throat' variety and finally if you do it with a properly somber mien and an air of world weariness, why then you're positively statesmanlike.

The London riots are sad reminders of what desperate people do during desperate times. I heard what set em off was police killing someone. Don't know the details, but do know that the rioting resulting in a Dutch/England friendly getting cancelled.

I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot more riots worldwide in the coming years as the economy continues to tank.

Oh man that Wisconsin State Fair. We'd go to it regularly when I went up there, probably a dumpy side of Milwaukee now compared with what it once was, kind of like the Texas State Fair in Dallas around the Cotton Bowl. Areas just tend to fall apart after awhile, especially if they only get used a ton for a small minor fraction of the year.

Stuff started to turn south when they started requesting donations for bathroom maintenance. Mind you, THEY CHARGE ADMISSION TO THE FAIR and they want you spend additional money on BATHROOM MAINTENANCE. They even hung up guilt signs in the bathrooms to show what an awful place it would be without the bathroom attendants. Yes, they started assigning bathroom attendants to watch the bathroom collections... that were not coming in, hehe.

London riots
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2011/08/london_riots.html
Two nights of rioting in London's Tottenham neighborhood erupted following protests over the shooting death by police of a local man, Mark Duggan. Police were arresting him when the shooting occurred. Over 170 people were arrested over the two nights of rioting, and fires gutted several stores, buildings, and cars. The disorder spread to other neighborhoods as well, with shops being looted in the chaos. Collected here are images from the rioting and the aftermath.

And, after looking in to how the rioting kept going....

British Parliament member calls for BBM suspension following London riots
BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has agreed to work with London authorities as they begin their investigation into recent riots. According to some Londoners, rioters were using RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger service, along with social networks such as Twitter, to organize the attacks. “It is clear that technology is being used, including in demonstrations, to direct people and undermine the police,” London’s deputy assistant commissioner Stephen Kavanagh told Bloomberg. “It is not for us to to moan about this, but to adapt policing style and deal with it.” RIM typically prides itself on the security of its BBM service and has denied access to governments worried the chat platform could be used for planning terrorist attacks. “We feel for those impacted by the riots in London,” RIM wrote in a recent tweet. “We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can.” Read on for more.
Despite RIM’s efforts, one Member of Parliament, David Lammy, has called on the Canadian company to suspend BlackBerry Messenger services while the riots continue, Reuters said. “This is one of the reasons why unsophisticated criminals are outfoxing an otherwise sophisticated police force,” Lamme tweeted. “BBM is different as it is encrypted and police can’t access it.” Twitter isn’t giving up information as quickly. A spokesperson for the social network told Bloomberg that it would require a “subpoena or court order” before giving the police access to private user information. Read on for more on how one group of hackers is reacting to RIM’s cooperation.

A hacker group who calls themselves “Teampoison,” recently broke into RIM’s official BlackBerry blog and warned the company to stay out of the riots. In a letter, the group said:

If you do assist the police by giving them chat logs, gps locations, customer information & access to peoples BlackBerryMessengers you will regret it, we have access to your database which includes your employees information; e.g – Addresses, Names, Phone Numbers etc. – now if u assist the police, we_WILL_make this information public and pass it onto rioters.

I don't think that the London rioters are necessarily thugs or hooligans. Okay, they are. But, I think the problem is that the British empire has long since faded and songs like "Rule Britannia, Britannia Rules the Waves" must seem quite hollow to those folks that still live a very class-structured society with really little hope and dreams of a better life.

For even those who do well for themselves and become successful stockbrokers in London's very large financial services industry, you can still hear the upper class Britons call them "barrow boys" behind their back. Barrow boys refer to very young kids who were employed to go out and sell fruit or vegetables on a wheel barrow in the streets of London a century ago.

Yeah, I don't have a high opinion of stockbrokers anywhere but that does seem like a pretty low blow.

I hope the American dream never dies and I hope that our best universities always give American kids the chance to succeed. Otherwise, class warfare can get very ugly and ugly in a hurry.

We look back upon history, and what do we see? Empires rising and falling, revolutions and counterrevolutions, wealth accumulated and wealth disbursed. Shakespeare has written of the rise and fall of great ones, that ebb and flow with the moon.

I look back upon my own fellow countrymen (Great Britain), once upon a time dominating a quarter of the world, most of them convinced, in the words of what is still a popular song, that ‘the God who made them mighty, shall make them mightier yet.’

I’ve heard a crazed, cracked Austrian announce to the world the establishment of a Reich that would last a thousand years. I have seen an Italian clown (Mussolini) say he was going to stop and restart the calendar with his own ascension to power. I’ve heard a murderous Georgian brigand in the Kremlin , acclaimed by the intellectual elite of the world as being wiser than Solomon, more humane than Marcus Aurelius, more enlightened than Ashoka.

I have seen America wealthier and, in terms of military weaponry, more powerful than the rest of the world put together–so that had the American people so desired, they could have outdone a Caesar, or an Alexander in the range and scale of their conquests.

All in one lifetime, all in one lifetime, all gone! Gone with the wind!

England, now part of a tiny island off the coast of Europe, threatened with dismemberment and even bankruptcy. Hitler and Mussolini dead, remembered only in infamy. Stalin a forbidden name in the regime he helped found and dominate for some three decades. America haunted by fears of running out of those precious fluids that keeps their motorways roaring, and the smog settling, with troubled memories of a disastrous campaign in Vietnam, and the victories of the Don Quixote’s of the media as they charged the windmills of Watergate.

All in one lifetime, all in one lifetime, all gone! Gone with the wind!

Behind the debris of these solemn supermen, and self-styled imperial diplomatists, there stands the gigantic figure of One: because of whom, by whom, in whom, and through whom alone, mankind may still have peace–the person of Jesus Christ.
~ Malcolm Muggeridge

This is right. It's not about thugs or youthful thrill-seekers. It's about power.

They're burning the wrong buildings.

NP wants the riots to stop so that he can see his beloved Spurs (as in, Tottenham Hotspur, not his other beloved Spurs of San Antonio).

No matter how much we educate ourselves into stupidity, the gigantic figure of Jesus will tower, outlast, outshine, out-reason, any reich, any king, any philosopher, humanity can come up with. Until he returns, and that gnawing suspicion you've had all this time about God being real, and that fleeting thought of doubt whether it makes sense that God isn't real, will become as clear as the bright sunshine after morning rain.

Albo may be over the top, but I'll take his "direction" over what the admitted God hater has to say. Besides, "but shall have everlasting life" resonates so much stronger than "hot, your wife is and I wish I had one like that."

Dontcha' think?

I was listening to the BBC today and they said that 17.5% of their children are illiterate. They talked about how parents had abdicated their duties as parents and how scared adults were of children at the bus stops. They have some real issues in England.

We worry about souls. Why do you worry about anything, we are practically a cosmic accident, with no value, no worth, and locked in our DNA.

Gotta love religions who depress people until they join. I can make the most of what I have without it, thank you very much.

With your logic, why do we even worry about souls?

LOL

No. Some of my adult Boy Scout lesder meetings are in LDS churches and I have seen that picture in many of them. A lot of my friends in the scouting community are Mormon and they are great people. They have tried to get me to join but I was born Irish Catholic and it is hard to change. Sort of like growing up Jewish.
