Albuquerque, N.M. --- First-year coach Yvonne Sanchez has approved the release of the Lobo women’s basketball non-conference schedule for the upcoming season. The slate is comprised of 13 games, including one exhibition contest and the New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lobos will kick off the season playing host to New Mexico Highlands on Nov. 4 in a 7 p.m. exhibition contest. They’ll then hit the road for Texas for a Nov. 11-14 stretch during which they’ll take on Texas Tech on the 11th and North Texas on the 14th. The times for both games are still to be determined.

“We’re going to be doing a lot of recruiting in Texas, so it’s important for us to get out there and play some games,” Sanchez explained. “Texas Tech and North Texas are both home and home games, so that also benefits us.”

The team will host Oklahoma in their first regular season home game on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. The Sooners made a Sweet 16 appearance in last year’s NCAA tournament in Indianapolis and promises to present a challenge for the Lobos.

They’ll play seven straight non-con games in the Pit to close out November and open December, including the annual New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament. Eastern New Mexico will visit for a Tuesday night game on Nov. 22, while Pepperdine, Morehead State and Idaho will be in town for the two-day tournament on Nov. 25 and 26.

“Different conferences are going to be represented at this year’s tournament, so it will showcase different talent from across the country,” Sanchez said. “This is a plus for us, because it puts our team up against talent that they may not otherwise see early on in the season.”

Loyola Marymount will visit to kick off December, as the Lobos will host the Lions on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. Back-to-back in-state rivalries will be presented in the New Mexico State game on Dec. 4 and UTEP on the 10th, while Northern Colorado will finish the home stand on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.

Three road games will close out 2011 for the Lobos against Houston Baptist, Arizona and New Mexico State on Dec. 18, 21 and 30 respectively. All three game times have yet to be announced. The Lobos will play their final non-conference game at home on Jan. 2 to kick off 2012, hosting Houston at 7 p.m.

“Every year our non-conference schedule is challenging, and this year is no different,” Sanchez said. “We have more road games than usual this season, but the players are ready. They’re taking some much needed time at home with their families right now, but they’re really ready to come back and get started.”
