I was in Duluth, MN in August a few years back. I went to job at about 6am, and it was 37 ****ing degrees. In August.

I went to Iowa to pick up some hay a couple years back, and it was 20-below zero with a windchill of almost 40 below. My truck wouldn't start, and the hay bales were stuck to the ground.

I was changing a waterpump on the blacktop on a Postal jeep in Tucson about 28 years ago and it was 119 degrees.

I mentioned the Dakotas because nobody has their extremes. 110+ in the summer, and 40-below in the winter.

i wasn't talking about the people. i was talking about the weather. between the opressivley hot summers, the tornados in the spring and the wicked ice storms in the winter, i'll put oklahoma up against anywhere in the world for weather misery. add all the little earthquakes we get (but usually don't feel because they're too small) that move the ground around and tear up the roads and you have the perfect storm of ****ty environment.

im not worried about the earthquakes... im merely pointing out that they contibute to the overall ****tiness of oklahoma roads... we've all been out of state and we've all marvelled at the awesomeness of the roads elsewhere.

when a guy i used to work with came to town for his interview, he thought his rental car was busted till he figured out it was just our super ****ty roads. the heat expanding them in the summer, the cold shrinking them, the ice expanding in the little cracks... all that causes the roads to suck donkey balls here.

South Dakota gets damned hot. Damned cold too. Here's a link to annual temperature with the state's ranking next to them. This particular one basically ranks the states based on the extremes - summer to winter.

#1 is Florida, #2 is Hawaii.

Oklahoma comes in at #11, far from "the most inhospitable weather on the planet." BTW, North Dakota is #49, and South Dakota is #38.

couldn't tell the difference between a "busted car" & bad roads.
OK has good roads & bad roads.

it's hotter here (dallas county) most years than OK. winters here tho, seem to be much more mild.

Highest temp I was in was in Needles back in the 70's. Over 120 degrees when we hit needles and checked into a motel at around 5pm. Both the dog and the wife were laying on their backs on the bed with their tounges hanging out as I dragged the sh*t in from the RV. Left in the morning hours about 2am to take advantage of the 80 degree temp (the RV at the time didn't have A/C).

And while saying Oklahoma is one of the most inhospitable places in the planet is definitely hyperbole, it is one of the harder places for newcomers to get used to in country. Temperature differential between seasons isn't that important. Our summers are absolutely brutal for northerners. I've heard multiple stories about people sweating in places that they didn't think possible in their first summer here.

oklahoma is the most inhospitable environment on the planet.

Northern Siberia is a more inhospitable environment than Oklahoma and it's not even close.

As far as continental areas it ranks up there with Antarctica and interior Greenland for being inhospitable for humans. Come to think of it, portions of Mt. Everest above 28,000 feet (commonly referred to as "the death zone" due to it's lack of oxygen) would be another place I'd prefer Oklahoma to.

Other places that are less human-friendly than OK include the Mojave, Death Valley, the Sahara, the Nullarbor Plain, most of Saudi Arabia, the Gobi...

I've lived all over this great land of ours and I have a fairly reasonable idea of what is considered lousy weather.

Check it out skip, some of the worst continental zones in North America include the upper midwest (Iowa, southern MN, South Dakota, parts of Nebraska)...all those places experience about an 80-90 degree variation in temp between summer maximum and winter minimum. Places like the deserts I've mentioned and Siberia can push 110 degrees. I believe Oklahoma's is around 60-70.

People that live south of Watonga don't know how harsh a winter can be in Oklahoma. the wind blows constantly west of 1-35 and north of 1-40. In the winter that makes it brutal. I grew up in NW OK and remember the hot summers and chilly winters. If you think that OK weather is hard to deal with, you've obviously never spent any time up north. I spent 20 long miserable winters in MN. The coldest temp I remember was -42. Coldest windchill was -85. One 2 week stretch in January, the highest temp we had was -10. Earliest snowfall was 38" on Halloween, and the latest was 21" on April 27. The worst part about winter there is that it starts Nov 1 and you are still waiting for the snow to melt in late May. I now live in Houston and today was 101, and I just went for a walk and it's still 95 out and I enjoyed every step. I'd much rather sweat than shiver, and you'll never hear me complain about the heat.

Dubai snickers mildly at your "wall of heat".

Any comparison of a Siberian summer and a ok one is laughable.

Ok is not the most inhospitable place on the Planet by any stretch. But ok summers are tough by any standard.

I'm from Tucson. Summers here are "not too bad." *****.

I've grown up in Oklahoma and been through countless padded summer football practices, played in many all-day summer baseball tournaments (some of which didn't even have a cover to the dugout), participated in several summer basketball tournaments in gyms with no AC, and even took part in a couple rugby 7's tournaments. None of that is relevant, though. Oklahoma has the 4th hottest summers in the US, and it doesn't matter if you grew up wearing coats in Arizona (which, BTW, is not one of the three states with hotter summers) or streaking in Antarctica.

Besides Mjcpr's comment what you've said right there is right on the money. I mean everyone that ever stood up to Switzers Defenses back in the 70's knows that an *** Whooping was coming back then even if they were to get lucky and pull out a win.

We've got a lot of posters that don't get to see a lot of games in the flesh. The day ole McNabb puked his brains out in Norman and we pulled off a win against Syracuse at Home on one of John Blake's better days of Coaching you just knew we won that one because we could handle the extreme temps and humidity that we endure here. There have been so many others. We have played in tornadic rains and days that were hot enough to make you puke that turned cold enough to catch pneumonia by the time night turned into the 4th qtr. I'm sure many others have endured tough Weather too but we have done it in the Big 8 and now the Big XII for decades. Even Nebraska always thought they had an edge on Teams because they had endured more cold weather but we have endured the many extremes that Oklahoma Weather brings us. Those of us that have worked in it for years, camped in it for years, run Cattle or farmed in it for years know where the toughness comes from and it's why we have 7 Trophies to OUr name.

You hit it right on the Money about Nate IMO. He's 100% behind us when the weathers nice but to have to endure a bit of bad weather to root OUr Boys on to number 8 he'd probably rather see us drop a game as to have to stand in the freezing weather of an Ice Bowl or the day you'd pay $100 for an ice cold bottle of water to get you through the 4th qtr of a close game.

I know the stuff I've endured as a fan is nothing compared to what OUr boys have endured to put wins on the board but I can tell you this....I'm PrOUd of every moment I spent rooting Barry and Bob's teams on when I could have been at the bar watching on TV.

It's called being a hardcore and I'm proud to be one.

There's one thing that brings Oklahoma's summertime temps up to that average. It's called Altus/Lawton/Tipton/Frederick/Mangum/Hollis etc. That little SW corner of the state skews the hell out of the rest of the state's numbers.

I've lived here for over 20 years now. I can remember several years during this time that the Norman/OKC area never hit 100 all year. When I lived in Tucson, it was 100+ beginning in early May, and stayed that way through October. Every year. The only respite being the monsoons in July/August where the highs would drop to the high 90's because of the rain/clouds.

Likewise, the Northern half of Arizona skews their average numbers downward. I guess one would have to think a little to figure it out though.

The gray days get old too. Seattle was the first place I lived after growing up in OK. I thought it was heaven at first because of the cool temps and frequent rain. But about 4 or 5 years of weeks on end of gray skies and damp, drizzly weather, and I began to miss the sunshine.
