Who's ready for iAmerica?

As the BBC has reported, the software company Apple has more cash on hand than the United States federal government, according to the company's financial records.

Apple's quarterly financial report shows that the company responsible for the iPad, iPod and the iPhone now has $76.4 billion in reserve cash, while the Treasury Department is sitting on just $73.7 billion.

The feds could probably learn a thing or two from Apple's success. Congress remains embroiled in a debate over spending and whether the federal government, which currently owes trillions in debt, should be allowed to borrow even more. International credit rating agencies have threatened to downgrade the national debt for the first time in the nation's history if Washington doesn't come up with a solution to lift the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling while implementing a concrete plan to get the nation's financial house in order.

Meanwhile, Apple's financial report shows that the company's profits, even through the last recession, are booming.

Shouldn't a terribly successful international corporation have more cash than our government? :/

tax revenue and sales revenue aren't comparable. you can't compare the cash on hand of a business to that of a government. government doesn't manufacture products to be sold to anyone. they use thier cash to fix roads so the businesses that pay taxes can move goods from point a to point b. good for apple for having such a massive profit margin, but largely meaningless.

Even a moderately successful one should.

The last thing you want is your government holding cash.

The next to last thing you want is your government racking up huge debts.

Apple has received some criticism for keeping so much cash, instead of paying it as dividends to shareholders or do a buyback. But I think they want to be in good position for acquisitions and other situations that require cash.

The U.S. government does not need cash reserves. If they need more, they can just print some.

At least that is how one side of the aisle thinks.

all the government needs to do is make the next iPhone and iPad

making the best laptop around couldn't hurt either...

So maybe Apple could buy the U.S. Gubmint and lay off a bunch of Reps and Senators as well as miscellaneous other benefits and let the people experience how balanced budgets are attainable.

It could work, it couldn't be any worse.

Only because doing business WITH the government is mandatory!
