Not surprising... It was only a matter of time.

I guess we're smarter than the UNC Admin. We all saw this coming a year ago.

Leach to UNC...

So are allot of our fans still wanting us to hire him for OUr defense?

Curly Bill

Leach and his "fast break" style of football might fit in well with the UNC folks.

Leach to UNC...

He's been on record as saying he'd like to coach there...

what took them so long?

Leach to UNC...

I would personally love this, but I worry that Leach would just be a tool like he was at Maryland. Brought in, made to be thought that he was being taken seriously, learning later that he wasn't even in strong consideration.

$1.8 million is by no means chump change or a big time salary, but I imagine that UNC wanted more than 8-5 seasons (and an overall losing conference record) out of such a highly touted guy with the record he had at the U.

So... perhaps it wasn't just the NCAA issues... awwww, who am I trying to kid

I'd be stunned if they hired Leach. They will go for a safe coach, since they are already in trouble with the NCAA.

Tennessee better get that dam bowl win the f***ing deserved.

^^^i am glaring because Leach is the exact opposite of NCAA trouble. We're talking high graduation rates, very few eligibility issues or pro jumpers and just basically a group of underrecruited overachievers.

 or are you talking about being a big meanie to poor widdle Craig James Junior?

Umm... not coaching at UNC if anyone who reads the news is involved in the hiring process. :D

Blake will be busy defending himself to be able to coach.

I like the Leach to UNC deal. They need another pirate in that state.

I'm personally hoping Leach comes back to BIG 12 Country. This conference is really boring without him.

With this being the worse time to fire their coach, I would strongly consider hiring Mike Leach. I'd even let his name slip out to the press just to keep Carolina's name in the headlines. He's a recognized name with whom recruits are familiar with. I think his graduation rate of 80% and the fact that he ran a clean program has to factor in with an AD at some point. Carolina is in hot water for not running a clean program, so it would make sense to consider someone with a proven record of avoiding the NCAA dog house. I would also consider Malzahn (Auburn), Petersen (Boise St.), Richt (UGA) if he's let go after the season, Sumlin (Houston), Holtz (S. Fla) - he used to coach ECU, so he's very familiar with the Carolina area. I think UNC can get a recognizable name, it just depends on how much $$ they're willing to pay. They're a program on the rise in terms of recruiting, facility upgrades, etc., and the ACC is not an overly strong conference like the SEC.

Does the timing of this seem odd to anyone else? Either something else will be coming out in the news very soon or they already have the successor lined up. Why else would they fire him now??

Seriously, I have family in the area, one a big UNC guy and the name they are throwing around is Heupel.

UNC is a big school and there's no good reason why they can't have pretty good football. This could be a great job for someone.

The new scapegoat: Firing your coach so you don't get the NCAA ban hammer.

Highly compensated coaches be warned! It doesn't matter how much winning you've done or how recently it was! If the NCAA is ready to drop the hammer on the program, you will be dropped first in hopes of getting lesser punishment! YOU WILL NOT BE RETAINED!

Hey UNC if you fired Butch Davis after last regular season ended you could have had Kevin Wilson.. You know he is a Alumni right?

I fully expect them to just promote an assistant rather than doing the coaching search a week before camp starts.

BUT... I'm just gonna toss this name out there:

Tommy Tubberville.

It's not the SEC, but it's not Lubbock either.

It's going to be "Revenge of the Nerds" as the ex chem. professor who is now running things looks for some UNC alum assistant coach at a non-BCS school that hasn't had a winning record since the Korean War. Plus---it's almost August! I don't know if even Stoops (blessings be upon him) could salvage this. At least I can drive to Charlotte to see the Panthers.

You'd be surprised. It wasn't cheap to get Butch Davis and a lot of people are really p.o.'d. Besides, what else is there to do in Chapel Hill on a beautiful Fall day? Sitting there for 4 hours watching your team get waxed is no fun anywhere.
