Well, I'm on record as stating that there are two kinds of music: Stones and Not Stones, so you'd go far to dissapoint in this oevre. I prefer Start Me Up.

Satisfaction is the perfect background music for the scene from Apocalypse Now on the gunboat as Martin Sheen's character is looking at photographs of Colonel Kurtz, while the crew, all of them young men, are rocking out, raising hell (one of them is water skiing and the wake from the boat swamps some women trying to do their laundry) and having a good time. Teenagers with automatic weapons listening to rock 'n roll in an alien environment pretty much sums up the entire Vietnam war . . .

The live version of Midnight Rambler I had in mind was the one that was on the Hot Rocks album. I don't know when or where it was originally recorded. Might check it out, to find the answers.

HERE WE GO!
"One notable 1969 performance of Midnight Rambler(running just over nine minutes) was captured for the 1970 album, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! and was re-released on the 1971 compilation album Hot Rocks 1964-1971. This rendition features Mick Taylor as lead and slide guitar, in addition to Jagger, Richards, Wyman and Watts. Versions from 1975 following the departure of Taylor from the band feature Ronnie Wood instead of Taylor. "Midnight Rambler" returned to the Rolling Stones' stage repertoire in 1989 and has remained a powerful concert favourite ever since. The rendition featured in the Stones' 2003 concert film Four Flicks runs about twelve minutes."-from Wiki about midnight Rambler

Go find an old Stones album and put it on. Then listen to anything produced, by anyone, in the last 10 years.
Music is surely subjective, but dayam, I weep for the youth of today to not have anything but dreck to capture this era. Or maybe that does capture this era; who knows?

C&CDean
9/9/2011, 09:16 AM
And to make matters worse for today's youth, the Stones aren't even one of the top-5 bands from that era. IMHO. Seriously, there's a couple bands who were popular that never clicked with me. They're one, so is AC/DC. If I did have to pick a favorite Stones song it would be either Sympathy for the Devil or Gimme Shelter - even though Grand Funk's version smokes theirs. Anyhow, nice to see Jammin' back.

Ton Loc

Under my Thumb
Gimme Shelter

Maybe not their best but easily my two favorites.

There is good music today, but its not your music. Your (the collective your) music is what got you through High School and College or your teens to your early twenties.

So anything that comes out now, for the most part I think its ok but nothing will replace the artists and bands I grew up with.

As someone who qualifies as "youth of today", I did go through a phase where I listened to basically nothing but classic rock, including but not limited to Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Pink Floyd, etc. It only lasted about a year. There's plenty of good music still being made today that I enjoy more. It's just not on the radio.

Anyway, my favorite Stones song is still "Sympathy for the Devil."

Jammin is right though, there is lots and lots of good music being produced today. You just have to know where to find it. The music biz has changed so much in the last 20 yrs it's crazy. Even in my advanced stage of dementia I'm not one to sit around and listen to music that was popular when I was in high school or college. while I still like that music there is so much that I like that is being produced right now.

I can't hardly stand classic rock radio because they play the exact same 3 Steve Miller/Fleetwood Mac/Eagles/ACDC/Zeppelin/Who/Stones/etc. over and over and over. There's so many good songs these older folks have out that most people have never heard. I wouldn't even know where to go to listen to "new music" so I listen primarily to the blues now. Not Howlin' Wolf/Etta James/or even BB King. I like it harder - Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Tommy Castro, Robben Ford, Albert Cummings, Coco Montoya, etc. Without the blues, there never would have been R&R.

Depends on what you like to listen to. I have found plenty of fantastic music that has come out just in the past 5 years, let alone past 20.Name some songs and their artists. I love music. Just don't hear much new stuff that is worthy. I heard/saw Them Crooked Vultures on Austin City Limits a couple of weeks ago, and was impressed with about half the stuff they played. I like the Asteroids Galaxy Tour's Golden Age, but haven't heard much more by them. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying their isn't new stuff that's good. Just that I believe there's a lot less than there used to be, and is it even as good, anyway? What can compare with YES, THE BEATLES(1966-70),LED ZEPP, MOODY BLUES, HENDRIX, DOORS, EARLY VAN MORRISON, LAURA NYRO, etc. nowadays?

love Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford, and the like. You listen to Derek Trucks? He's awesome. Erick Lindell, Tab Benoit or Govt. Mule?

It depends on your tastes where to go for newer stuff. But there are lots of bands that are newer that play older sounding stuff. Try Ray Lamontagne, or the BLack Keys. Foo Fighters have a lot of throw back sounds (if you will)

Theres a guy named JJ Grey that has what he calls front porch blues that's a mix of blues, old soul and rock, really good stuff.

John Butler trio sounds like old rock, but I'm off track. Go to Amazon and type in any of these people to sample their wares. I like Itunes because maybe you only like a little of it, itunes has a deal where it says others also bought this and it's other groups that are similar to the one your sampling.

btw, totally agree with the classic rock radio. it really blows.
