View Full Version : Have You Ever Won Anything Significant From The Lottery, Raffles, Drawings?

lexsooner

Not me, other than $25 gift certificates from Cracker Barrel and Walmart in a workplace drawing. I will not buy lottery tickets and I have had no luck with raffles. I have a friend who has a knack for winning big prizes. Lexington, KY, had an NHL farm team for about one season and she went to a game and won a new SUV in a drawing. She has won other prizes and drawings. I need her mojo.

I won $100 when I was a little kid on a Dr Pepper pull tab prize.

Even if I am poor and/or stupid, I do play the lottery on occasion....I think I may have won $10 or $20 once, usually $3, $4 or $7. Actually, usually $0 but you know what I meant.

If you include gambling, I once won about $72 on a $6 bet at Keeneland. It was a muddy track and the long shots came through that day. Otherwise, I have always lost at the end of the day at Keeneland.

It's neither of those. It's simply a tax on people who are bad at math. Many of whom (but not all) are stupid and/or poor.

I won a trash compactor in 1968. I was thrilled as I was the only kid I knew that had one :D My folks used it until the supply of bags it came with were gone.

The damn thing weighs about three or four hundred pounds. At least it seems that way when moving it. My sister has been using it for about twenty five years. I replaced something on it about 15 years ago and had it repainted for her when they built a new house. It's built like a tank with heavy motors and all acme threaded machine stock for the scissor jack inside it. I believe it will outlive us all.

I personally have gotten no use out of it other than to be amazed at what it could break when I was a child.

Rick Neuheisel? Is that you?

I have won $100 on Powerball 3 times... once solo, twice with group buys.

And the Kansas Lottery had Keno that you could play in bars and I would win enough to pay my tab at the end of the night about half the time we went to play keno.

The most I ever won gambling though, was playing darts at a dive bar on the campus of Wichita State University in the mid 90's. Well, until the place got robbed enough times by gunpoint that I think it finally shut down.

Joined an Internet Casino about 5 years ago. I was playing a Fruit Frenzy slot machine. I looked up an noticed I had won a random jackpot of $8,000. I didn't get very excited about it because I figured there was some trick to it. The next day I thought I would max the bet out and bet $150 per spin. I had it up to $26,000 and stopped at $24,000. I thought it was all a joke so I called them on the phone.

To make a very long drunken story short. I had $24,000 in my checking account within 3 days.:)

I won OU basketball season tickets for the '92-'93 season at some drawing at the Lloyd Noble Centers. They called my number and told me to come on down. Unfortunately, all of the gates to the floor were closed, so they told me to climb over the gate. I did not do so very gracefully.

I later won a 20" TV during a drawing at my company's picnic.

My late father's nickname was Diamond Jim, since it seemed he always came up a winner. He liked to gamble. Before I was born (my older siblings tell the story) about how he and my mom were at a casino operating illegally in OKC sometime in the early 1950's and daddy won $1700 shooting craps, his game of choice, which was almost enough to purchase a new Buick back then. He also wagered on football through a well known OKC bookie and played that game well enough to consistently come out ahead (he paid all four years of my college expenses in cash). On a trip to Vegas he stopped at a quarter slot machine as they were leaving for the airport and hit a $250 jackpot (my best was $50 on a dollar slot). Daddy also won a 19" color tv on a raffle ticket back when they would sell for $300 or so. Not really something he won but my siblings and I still receive a pretty nice check for oil & gas royalty my father inherited from his mother . . .

I also won two Cyndi Lauper tickets by being the first caller. I was sitting in a Jeep listening to the radio waiting on a friend when the contest was announced. There was a payphone about four feet from me.

I never really considered it a win as I told them to give them to someone that wanted them. I think they sent me some coupons for Mountain Dew or Dr Pepper as a replacement for the concert tickets.

I once won about $1,000 worth of assorted Hershey's chocolate from Wheel of Fortune.com. It was third prize in a contest to win a Mercedes convertible. The rules said you could enter as often as you wish, so we set up some software called "Mouse Machine" to click the "enter" button over and over. I probably entered 50,000 times and I still didn't get the damned Benz. F**kers. The candy was good though. One of the items included was a Hershey bar the size of a small door.

I've also had some decent nights and blackjack and video poker in Vegas.

One time I was working the register and this guy with a Pete Rose looking hair cut walked up and bought a bag of pistachios (59 cents). I tried to make small talk about whether he had got any rain up in Dallas where he was from. He asked me: "what business is it of yours, where I'm from? Friendo."

Long story short he made me call heads or tails on a coin toss. I won! He claimed I had won everthing, but it just looked like an ordinary quarter to me.

Won a couple of nights in a suite at a hotel in Japan and a separate package of stuff for the house, all in all it was about $600.

They had been selling tickets all week for the outdoor festival, for the drawing on the Sunday afternoon as the big finale.

Earlier that day it was storming like crazy. Our neighbor told us to go no matter what, because they had to do the drawing and they had to follow the rules they put in place, which was present to win. There were about 25 people standing out in the rain for 20 gifts... They tried to pull names from the big pot, but, of course, nobody was winning so we just showed our tickets and they wrote the numbers down on pieces of paper and drew from that.

Even with the odds so much in my favor, I still only won one of the cheaper gifts...

State Lotto - The jackpot was $6,475,000, but that was if you took the 26 yr annual installments. The total lump sum amount, less state and federal taxes was much less than 1/2 the grand prize amount. Bought some toys, put the rest into retirement.

My former tennis partner's older brother hit the Power Ball in Kentucky a few years ago. He was working as a forklift driver at a Toyota parts subsidiary, as well as his wife, but naturally quit immediately after winning. I think he shared his wealth with his family because my former tennis partner took ownership of her Mom and Dad's house and they bought a nice new house. It's a good thing she was already engaged and then married when her brother hit the jackpot because she is the type who would get duped by some gold digger.
