It seems that there are a lot of Tulsa peeps that hang out here and I'm wondering about the Cain's Ballroom???

I know nothing about Tulsa and I'm looking on the map, but I can't really tell where in Tulsa it is.

I'm coming from the Lawton area and if I leave at 6:30am on Saturday morning should I be able to get to the ballroom by 10am?

Thanks for any help that you can offer.

I used to go there in the mid 70's when it reopened.

In the 40's it was a popular ballroom and dance hall, made famous by Bob Wills the Father of Western Swing.

Besides its heritage it was known for the spring-loaded dance floor with a giant star in the middle.

Yes, you'll make it in plenty of time.

It's just north outta the center of the downtown area. It used to be a pretty sleazy area when I was there.

(Maybe that was 'cause of me  )

It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive, but your gonna hit traffic in OKC, then your gonna have to deal with the dickheads that wanna drive 60 and the peckerheads that wanna drive 90 on the turnpike from OKC to Tulser...

Probably the premier 'music' related attraction between Austin, Memphis and Kansas City.
Not saying you should turn it into your home-away-from-home, but if you haven't been there and live anywhere close, it ought to be on your list. In terms of 20th century music history, there is no place that has any more than Cain's. On a par with the old CBGB's, Max's, The Kitkat Klub, etc. And right now, when it's stinking hot out, is the classic time to experience it.

Yes, I like it.

I always drive 100 on the turnpike. That way I don't have to deal with the peckerheads that go 60 to 90.

I have seen quite a few concerts there. It is small and cramped but legendary. It's just a few blocks north of downtown.

I still don't think my ears have stopped ringing after the Disturbed show.

I heard they even mop the puke up in the bathroom these days and they have a side room with a bar and EMSA is on standby in case you get stabbed.

i love that place

seen something like 10 shows there, probably, none while i lived in Tulsa...

saw Robert Plant, Wolfmother, Black Keys, She Wants Revenge, Dead Weather among others. nice relatively intimate venue.

it's on Main, North of Archer Street. it's pretty easy to find from inside downtown

I went to an Underoath show there about four or five years back now and during their big break down the bass was so loud that the wooden dance floor was literally undulating.

Ha I went to the Underoath concert around the same time. (damn it's been 5 years?) and I was thoroughly pleased

Cain's is pretty badass... even better sloshed

It was their Define the Great Line release tour. I had gotten a leaked copy of that album a few weeks before and I had been listening to it nonstop. I don't think the album had been officially released by the time they were there, but then to hear the songs in person with the way they shook the floor, probably one of the best concerts ever. I saw them somewhere else and it wasn't near the same experience.

First show I saw there was the Foo Fighters and Ween back when I was a Jr in HS. It's been at least 10 years since my last visit. Thinking about going in Aug. to see Matisyahu though.

I recall an interview with Clapton in which he said that playing Cains had to be on the bucket list for any guitar player.

Thanks all for the info and stories of the ballroom. I'm going to a memorial there in the morning and it sounds like it is going to be a unique and special place for a memorial service.
