I used to be a pretty loyal customer of Johnston & Murphy. They made a decent shoe, priced between $175-$250 or so, but recently, the quality seems to have dropped way off. I have a couple of pairs of shoes that need to be retired, one that flat out died (stitching on the front of the shoe actually started coming apart and it's a pretty new shoe).

I've been looking at brands like Allen Edmonds to replace the retirees with. Anyone got any recommendations?

send your shoes into J&M to their refurb department - a full refurb is $130 - and they'll seem like new

i'm a loyal J&M customer

i'm not a fan of Allen Edmonds - at all - depending on what style of shoe you're wearing - Cole Haan makes a good shoe

I've noticed the same thing about JM shoes. Not what they used to be. I've got an awesome shoe repair shop here in Bville and they are redoing my old ones a piece at a time but there's only so long I can hold out.
Following this with interest.

Crocs are too trailer trash to be homo. They go perfect with an OU jersey and jorts though.

so you're saying you're against wearing OU jersey's - but taking a players full name and jersey number as your handle is ok?

Whatever Alice. Not to sound all Bruce, but I have Ferragamo dress shoes and Crocs. Crocs are more comfortable. Period. I'm past the point in my life where I place any weight in what someone thinks of me. Now for work I can't wear Crocs, but I would if I could.

Define dress shoes. Thin leather type sole or is a rubber sole ok? I use to only wear JMs but my last two pairs have been Eccos. I wouldn't wear the Ecco's with a suit but for my day to day with slacks and a button up they look nice and are as comfortable as they come.

There you go! I still get a warm feeling when I look at the suits I used to wear and then slam the closet door in cold rejection and go put on jeans and a nice shirt. Small business rules in lifestyle. Kind of sucks in money-style, though.
Ecco's it is.

Oxford style, laces, no boots, no slippers. Ecco is definitely not something I'd think of as being a dress shoe. I'm wearing these with suits if that helps.

seriously - do a google search for j&m refurbish - print out the form, squeeze the shoes in a flat rate mail box and send it off - you'll get them back in 2-3 weeks looking like new with a pair of fancy new shoe bags..i've had one pair of j&m's refurbished twice now

One of the pairs that I have to retire is a wingtip oxford where the stitching on the front top part of the shoe (where the wingtip design is) actually came undone. It's rubber sole rather than leather (but with plenty of tread to spare). Do they just do minor repairs? I probably paid $200 for that shoe, but I'm hesitant to pour money into a pair of shoes which are just shoddy anyhow. I'd rather keep the $130 and put it towards a really good shoe worth wearing.

Regarding florsheims, I've seen 'em, haven't been terribly impressed. Same for Hugo Boss.
