Ersland just can't stop lying

A pharmacist convicted of murder has been faking a broken back, an examination of jail X-rays found.

Jerome Jay Ersland, 59, of Chickasha, has worn a back brace for years and has been prescribed powerful medication for pain. He told the police and news media he suffers from an inoperable back injury.

Sentencing is set for an Oklahoma pharmacist convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting death of a teenager who tried to rob the south Oklahoma City...

X-rays of his back were taken after he was incarcerated at Oklahoma County jail May 26. A radiologist who examined the X-rays reported none of his vertebrae were fractured, sources told The Oklahoman.

The doctor concluded Ersland has modest osteoarthritis of the spine, The Oklahoman learned. That is a condition men about his age often endure.
Also, medical workers at the jail reported seeing Ersland walking a hall there, at times, without his back brace. A nurse reported seeing Ersland, while without his brace, pick something up off the floor without problem.

It seems pretty clear to me that Ersland has mental issues. When I watched the police interview video on the Oklahoman website last month my first impression of Ersland was that he seemed rather simple, almost child like in the way he spoke.

Ersland could have come across more sympathetic to a jury had they seen he is not playing with a full deck, but he came to work doing the best he could and got overwhelmed by fear and confusion during the robbery. I wouldn't have a hard time buying that. His defense did him a disservice IMO.

As far as his similarities to Casey Anthony, there aren't many except that the jury got it right in both cases based on the evidence in front of them.

In Ersland's case, there was a video of the actual killing, multiple statements by Erlsand after the fact, which all turned out to be false. It was an easy murder 1 conviction based on the evidence presented (or rather, not presented by the defense). I agree, the defense having five lawyers and ZERO expert witnesses is absolutely insane. I understand them not putting Ersland on the stand, but they should have told him from day one to STFU. You would think that after all of the high profile cases Box has tried, that he'd be able to understand the P.R. aspects and other risks about talking to the media prior to trial--guess not. They basically put all of their eggs in the jury nullification basket and it backfired.

In Anthony's case, there were false statements, but absolutely no direct forensic evidence to even suggest what kind of crime (if any) took place. The jury followed the law, and acquitted because the state hadn't met its burden.

The State is doing everything they can to "sell" the prosecution and conviction of Jerome Ersland. They are just making Ersland look like he might be mentally ill which makes this conviction even more wrong.

Next thing they will do is mention a "rumor" that Ersland might have had improper relations with a child. Gotta love it.
