I remember that, too, and I had been thinking we might be looking at a similar scenario this year, but now I have doubts. There were 11 named storms before Katrina made landfall on August 29th. I remember Cindy and Dennis in particular. I hope I never go through another year like that as long as I'm living in Mississippi.

All the poor farmers who put in corn down me have already mowed/baled it. Problem is, it's tested way too hot. They'll have to mix it with something if they're going to feed it.

I've been pretty blessed. I cut my own hay early (only got about 1/2 a crop though), and I've been on a big hay job that had a lot of last year's prairie hay in it and I put up over 1000 round bales in the past few weeks. It's run out though, and I only have a couple small pastures of my own that I could cut, and they're ****. Problem is, **** hay is bringing a fortune now.

I've got some pasture that I didn't cut that will come back in time for a cutting if we can get some rain by early August or so. 2006 was bad, but I think this year is worse.

they've cut some corn here too but i think most of it is too hot..
some guys have told me they will harvest it ....that it'll make 30-50 which ain't bad at the current price...
my milo is still hanging tough....a good rain and it would still be respectable....but of course there is no rain in sight...

i hired a guy to cut a 10 acre patch of bermuda the other day...i had guys offering me $40/bale for it...
i put it on craigslist at $70 and the phone rang off the hook for an hour...
the next batch will be higher..
i'm thinking i should have just let my fields grow up to crabgrass for hay instead of spending $150k to plant milo...

How's that Global Warming thing going Al??

http://members.cox.net/franklipsinic/Other/Gore's%20tongue.jpg

Yeah Al, how's that Global Warming thing going?

***disclaimer*** I don't believe that record heat this summer (weather) has anything to do with climate, just the same as a cold snap (weather) has nothing to do with climate. But as far as I know, the same cartoonist hasn't done any clever Al Gore cartoon for the heat has he?

was just reading an article in the enid paper about the 100 degree day records for enid...
it says the record was 51 straight days in 1956 (doesn't say how many days total over 100)
next was 41 in 1954...
and then 40 in 1980....the most in my lifetime...
here we are at about 31....we'll likely break the 1980 record before we enter august...

THE TROPICAL SYSTEM NOW NEAR CANCUN MEXICO WILL NOT ONLY HELP
BRING TEMPERATURES DOWN A FEW DEGREES...ASSUMING ITS TRACK IS
SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT IS CURRENTLY EXPECTED...BUT IT MAY ALSO
BRING SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL TO SOME PARTS OF OUR FORECAST AREA.
BECAUSE ITS TRACK IS STILL UNCLEAR...HOWEVER...WE WILL CONTINUE TO
KEEP THE RAIN CHANCES LOW. REFINEMENTS WILL COME AS THE STORM GETS
CLOSER.

I actually drove through that microburst at I-40 and the fairgrounds last evening. Thought that I had another $8K in hail damage....but apparently not big enough to do any damage. With the wind, it sounded like a thousand BB guns shootin' the car! Scary!

(Oh yah! And I had left the passenger window and moonroof cracked open a little because of the heat!)
Kick me!

I was in it too. Saw that light pole snapped off at it's base, lying across two lanes of traffic. The wind was pretty impressive, shaking and buffeting the car while I sat there waiting to die.
