Making a sandwich with two entire loaves of bread seems cumbersome and wasteful. How did they do it before?

So before this people said, that is the coolest thing since...?

I think this is cooler:

In 1902, the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in Buffalo, New York.

I think they just tore it apart with their bare hands.

This is also the best method for eating a kitten.

I think they just baked little flat loaves.
Must have been a bitch cutting off the crust for your kid.

It took that long for someone to figure out how to slice a loaf of bread? Damn, we're stupid.

I'm with you. I rarely eat sandwiches and I would be toast without AC.

Sliced bread was invented the moment someone pulled out a blade and cut bread. This is just the date they started selling sliced bread over the counter. That's like saying the erection was invented the day Viagra went on sale.

if you never had it, you wouldn't miss it. when i was a kid, only Churches, movies, some dept. stores & (probably) some cafes.

i never lived in an air conditioned apt until i was 25. never had an air cond. car until i was 30.

my sister & bro-in-law moved to the Mojave desert in 1955 & didn't have air cond. car until 1964.

lived in a non-air apt, one in North Long Beach & another in Torrance.
lived in NLB for about 15 months before we finally bought a fan. of course, it just wasn't that hot in LA basin.

We were tougher then. I wouldn't want to do it today. I can remember taking my bed outside because it was to hot to sleep in the house.

I completely agree. That's had a huge effect on the way we live our lives and has contributed greatly to a shift in desirable living locations.

Yes but the innovation here is the simple application of an automated process for cleanly slicing the entire loaf before sale. Think about buying a 'sandwich loaf' that is unsliced and having to slice it yourself each time you wanted a slice of bread. You won't likely get good clean slices that way without some effort and care. It was a good simple invention that solved a widespread but minor problem. It's greatness is just overstated I think.

And THAT, folks, started the Great Depression. Instead of getting a whole loaf of bread and taking a bite and a chunk of meat and taking a bite and a hunk of cheese and taking a bite, we decided to go with dainty little cucumber sandwiches and having tea. La-dee-****ing-daw, we can't all pretend to be the lord and lady of the manor. Instead, we may all have to start learning again how to eat dust sandwiches.

Great story! From the link in the OP..................

On July 7, 1928, a baker in Chillicothe, MO, who was so broke he had nothing to lose, took a chance on a wild idea. Frank Bench, who owned the nearly bankrupt Chillicothe Bakery, fired up a power-driven, multi-bladed, bread-slicing gizmo and started selling loaves of sliced bread over the counter.

The idea that was so good it set the benchmark for all ideas to follow....

So, A guy named Bench set the benchmark?

Why didn't he call it benched bread?

Is that the origin of the word benchmark?
