Hey everyone. Been a while now. I retired from the Army and I'm back in Sooner land.

I'm doing a paper on the 2004 Championship and was wondering if someone could help me out. In particular can anyone refer me to an article that covers how OU beat Nebraska in the big 8 title game in 1972 but later forced to forfeit the game due to ineligible players?

I understand someone might have a personal recollection but I need and actual article or website that I can refer to. Unfortunately blogs and posts will not be counted.

Thanks Sooners

Well, technically there was no "Big 8 title game" though the OU/Nebraska game was a de facto title game for pretty much the entire existence of the league.

Here's a Sports Illustrated article that might help from 1973

Thanks guys.

I'm not clear on the forfeits. Did the NCAA force OU to forfeit the wins from 1972 or did OU voluntarily forfeit them?

There is actually a discrepancy as to the Sooner's record. The NCAA never officially forced Oklahoma to forfeit games, having only penalized scholarships, TV appearances, bowl appearances, etc.

Al Eschbach claims if Mark Harmon signs with us we win it all in '72.

Thanks SoonerPride.

Apparently my professor won't allow us to use Wikipedia as a valid source either. Go figure.lol

If you can't use wiki, check for answers in Bootlegger's Boy or Sooner Century, by Brent Clark.

Soonerstats.com is always a great reference for (almost) everything. There's also a site that details all the major NCAA infractions as written at the time....gotta use the googlewebs to find it.

That's an interesting read. Sounds kinda piddly compared to a lot of things that go on these days. Rules is rules I guess.

He would have been a QB at OU.
Apparently he's told quite a tale of his recruiting visit. Something about very nice girls showing him around.

That's too bad because if you can't find what you need there, you can write it yourself :)
