What age would it be worthwhile for a kid to start guitar lessons?

Fiddle lessons?

I would say 7 or 8 months at the latest.

I remember I started fiddling at a very young age.

5 if they're not too ADD. Really...as soon as they stop trying to eat it.

my understanding is that the programs for guitar don't start as early as piano or violin

My son was 9 when he started geeetar. Much younger than that, they don't have the hand strength. Or so I was told. Anyway, he loves it. He's 12 now and can wail on that sucker. Still trying to figure out how to make money out of that deal.

Motivation to learn an instrument trumps all, so whenever your child shows the willingness to put forth the necessary effort while realizing that immediate results are not always around the corner would be the proper time to begin the process.

I started guitar lessons when I was in second grade.

My friend taught me how to read chords and tabs the summer before I started 9th grade. I just taught myself how to play from there and I was pretty salty by the the time I graduated high school. You just have to catch a kid when he appreciates the music enough to "want" to learn.

I started guitar in the fourth grade. I think that's a good age.

I started when I was about 6th grade and became very frustrated not being able to hit many chords. Hand strength and size just weren't there yet. 9th grade came along and I started to catch on, end of high school I was able to shred... May I suggest a bass with a skinny neck first? little easier to play and it will teach the basics to where he will pick up guitar and shred.

My daughter started at 9 and is doing quite well. I think it all depends on the motivation and interest of the kid.
