Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Irony's a bitch.

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) —
Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in
upstate New York died after
he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the irony.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central
New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell
The Post-Standard of
Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983
Harley Davidson with a
group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike
spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced
dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a
helmet.

Same Irony here in Fla several years ago.
One of organizers of the petition that led to Florida no longer requiring a helmet to ride a motorcycle was killed a couple of years after the law was passed. Died from head injuries in a motorcycle accident.

It seems like a "freedom" or "independence" issue for those riders who don't wear helmets. Frankly, and this might sound bad, but many of them seem like they are working class guys who don't have much freedom or control in their lives, so something like being able to ride without a helmet takes on exceeding importance. There were many bandana-wearing riders with the biker look on the road this weekend, and it struck me as an escape for some of these guys.

I would have no issue with people smoking, drinking, abusing drugs or riding without helmets or seatbelts as long as they checked a litte box on life and health insurance forms stating their insurance companies aren't responsible for your health or death benefits in the event you are hurt, die or get health complications due to said activity. People have their freedom and responsible folks have more affordable premiums.

Our department has a no tobacco use policy in place for anybody hired after 1997. Old timers in the 70's and 80's would enjoy a cig during mop up after a fire was knocked down. Many filed for disability retirement due to reduced lung capacity or other breathing issues supposedly acquired on the job and these guys smoked their entire careers and after.
