And now a word from our sponsor

Rutgers announced last week that its stadium now will be called High Point Solutions Stadium as part of a 10-year, $6.5 million deal with the New Jersey-based tech company.

Rutgers becomes the 14th school to play its home games in a stadium named for a sponsor, joining Akron, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, Syracuse, Temple, Texas Tech, UCF, USF and Wake Forest. Miami, Pitt, San Diego State, Temple and USF play in NFL stadiums.

That means 11.7 percent of the 120 FBS schools play in a "sponsored stadium."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fact: $12 million toward the $75 million cost of (upgrading) the stadium project was donated by Christy Gaylord Everest, current publisher of The Oklahoman and daughter of Edward K. Gaylord, in 2002. The stadium was renamed to its current name in honor of this gift.

If renaming Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium because of a monetary "gift" isn't sponsorship then what is it? The University didn't rename it out of gratitude, the Gaylord's bought and paid for the right to rename after themselves.

I think if the Daily Oklahoman would have ponied up that money then we would have made the list.

The official story is that Gaylord Family gave the money and didnt want the name on the stadium and that Boren demanded it to honor such a large gift.

Believe it if you will

Some of these sponsor deals are kind of ridiculous. When we played Miami down there a couple of years ago, I think the name of the stadium was Land Shark Stadium. Then when the Super Bowl was played there that next February it was something different. I guess Land Shark didn't pony up enough sponsorship bucks to have their name on it for the SB?

I think they are only counting schools that have deals with corporate sponsors for naming rights....Louisville is especially bad when it comes to selling out.

I don't see any difference between corporations & idiots with a lot of $ that want their names on football stadiums.

The distinction is that it isn't BP Captiol, it's Boone Pickens. It's not Gaylord Hotels or Gaylor Enterprises, just Gaylord Family.

The way that OU officials (Boren and Castiglione namely) were staunchly supporting the name change to Memorial Stadium shows that something was wrong with that situation.

:O So yeah, if any billionaires would like to donate more to take the Gaylord name off and make it Oklahoma Memorial Stadium again, that would be cool. If not, it was not my money to accept or to give in the first place.

OU's stadium doesn't make the list because the Gaylords aren't a sponsor meaning their donation doesn't "expire" like a 10 year - 6.5 million dollar contract does. It's perpetual as long as a bigger donor doesn't knock them off.

That's because they were playing OU that day. This was scene outside the stadium.
