I enter into evidence Exhibit A-1: The Treaty of Tripoli, Article XI. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tripoli)

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Presented by John Adams, and unanimously ratified by the US Senate.

Imagine if such a secular proposal were introduced today. Neo-cons would be up in arms complaining that their rights were being violated and the heritage of the nation was being tromped upon. And of course that John Adams is a Muslim!

he also said this:

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

is it possible that they were simply telling the mooslims what they wanted to hear?

No, because Article XI wasn't included in the Arabic translation.

A religious PEOPLE, not a religious GOVERNMENT. The Constitution was designed not to negatively impact religion or the people that practice religion and, in fact, to keep out of it as much as reasonably possible.

I don't think that quote means what you think it means.

yeah i saw where it said people, not goverment

i'm not a fancy lawyer like you, and clearly not as smart

but - i do realize that those "religious people" created our non-religious government

i think the question/answer at hand is that our country was founded on christian principles

unless i'm mistaken, the pilgrims came here to practice their own form of religion - you can re-word that however you want, but the idea will be the same

Obviously John Adams didn't understand what we now would call Islamic Extremists.. Who knew the extremists have been around for so long??

When this treaty fell apart, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman from Tripoli explained why the Muslims kept attacking..

It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy's ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once.

The philosophy on which our government was created goes beyond Christian rules. They just happen to have a lot in common. Kinda like with the Jews and with the Muslims.
