The Prequel Trilogy wasn't as bad as many make it out to be. Nothing had been done like Star Wars before it so of course it was groundbreaking and revolutionary. Many people also saw it when they were younger and remember how they reacted to it.

No matter what the prequels were never going to do that. Many people saw them and didn't get that magic feeling they had when they saw Star Wars for the first time so, to them, it automatically sucked. If you go online and you see kids and teens, who never saw the original Star Wars in the theater, they look at the prequels the same way Baby Boomers/ Gen Xers look at the original Star Wars. They have the same excitement and magical feeling their parents had back in the day.

As for the "too much CG" argument, where do you stop? Star Wars was groundbreaking because it embraced technology and set out to do things nobody had done before. Were they suppose to stop? I can see both sides of the argument. Yes, you can make some awesome models but CG helps with time and money. What do you think is easier and cheaper, 100,000 clone suits made or 100,000 clones made in a computer? You have to pick and choose what you're going to spend it on. They still used models and such in the prequels but it's mixed in with CG so much you really don't notice it. For example the waterfalls on Naboo were actually them pouring salt.

http://massassi.hobby-site.com/massassi/pictures/episode_1/img/grand_arena_and_podrace_course06.jpg

You probably wouldn't believe me but that's a model right there. Not too bad huh?

Also, if you REALLY pick apart the original movies, like many do the prequels, you can find some bad things as well. Anakin whining? Don't remember Luke from New Hope? Ewoks?

The ONLY thing from the prequels I thought Lucas really screwed up on was trying to describe the force with midichlorians.

Now, what about Star Trek?

The first attempt sucked and sucked hard.
Search for Spock was a snoozefest.
The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country were a waste of perfectly good film that could have went to make hot dog documentaries.

After I went back and watched parts of Phantom Menace, I decided it wasn't a complete waste. But should have been much much better. Darth Maul should have had a more prominent role, e.g. Thought the next two episodes were a joke.

"Wrath of Khan" is a great story and can even get me weepy sometimes, something that none of the Star Wars movies ever came close to doing.

Yeah, but seriously though, the prequel trilogy is objectively terrrible. It's like they were written by an 11 year old.

I also realize that the group that's most likely to disagree are grown men without children that pay full movie theater price to see things like Green Lantern and Faster and Furiouser. So yeah, whatever.
