Betting there are more than a few grill-masters on here. I had a Kenmore gas grill that we flat wore out after ten years. Anybody got any recomendations?

Gas grill? Get a Weber (NG hookup if you have the hookup, otherwise LP). Things don't wear out and great customer service.

Charcoal? Green egg.

Smoker? Dunno.

quit playing games with your bbq with propane and natural gas....

Wanna be a grillmaster? Wanna be a man? Wanna be an American!?

Your only choice is this:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41MXBH52FVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/Weber-741001-22-5-Inch-One-Touch-Silver/dp/B00004RALU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1308928642&sr=8-2

That's too basic you say?

Fine, go with this one:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZWYYG9RQL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/Weber-751001-22-5-Inch-One-Touch-Charcoal/dp/B00004RALR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308928642&sr=8-1

"Well propane is just so much more convenient," you say? Fine. But, for the love of your steaks and your mancard, don't be a *****... Just go with this:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fLVZ7tkmL._AA300_.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/Weber-1421001-Performer-Charcoal-Grill/dp/B002M1PQZE/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1308928642&sr=8-9

It has propane start so you can feed your girly side for quick grilling... but you can also stop wasting good meat on upside down broilers...

You want to be an American, don't you?

 I've spent more time than I care to remember doing all of that. With my Traeger I get food that's at the very least just as good and much easier to make. We cook salmon, pork chops, burgers, steaks, pizza, chicken wings and lots more pretty regularly on it just by turning the on switch. I can also smoke pretty much anything I want on it just as easily. Real wood smoke flavor beats gas and charcoal any day of the week.

I use a 22.5 Weber for charcoal (steaks, pork loin, etc). The integrated ash bucket is a plus. I use my wood cranker for Tri tip and Babybacks. I don't touch propane.

Can you get an aggressive bark and smoke ring on a traeger or hastybake?

If you can, I would consider one, if not I will stick with my Oklahoma Joe's.(For smoking) and my Weber for grilling.

I use gas.

I'm proud of it.

Do I appreciate the finer things and delicious flavor charcoal brings? Yes. Do I cook 2-3 times a week for my family on the grill? Yes. Would it be a gigantic pain in the *** to fire up charcoal every single time I want to throw a piece of something on the grill? Yes.

Do I have sex with sheep?

Thankfully the answer is no.

Which one, or both?

EDIT:nevermind

I know you said "nevermind" but I'm curious what you didn't understand about my response?
The bark is what you want it to be. You prep the meat the way you would when smoking in any smoker(more sugar leads to darker, more fat leads to less bark). The temp is much easier to keep consistent from beginning to end in a Traeger than a regular wood smoker so you can easily get the bark as dark or as light as you want it.
As far as the smoke ring, you can get several types of wood pellets from Traeger and some will smoke more than others, again a personal choice.

I edited after realizing that you had truncated my question, eliminating Hastybake. Thank you very much for the extended response, I would like to do more smoking during the week so that I can still "bring the meat" to friends homes on the weekend without staying up all night on Friday.

If they have pellets that will give a good smoke, I will definitely consider one.

Hey 87, what do you want for yours/where are you?

This was a huge factor for me. It had just turned into work for me to the point that I was only smoking something 3-4 times a year. I started looking at different options of electric smokers and was about to buy a cookshack. Then my gas grill died and instead of buying both, I decided to get a Traeger based on a friends recommendation. We love ours, my wife cooks on it more than I do, we probably grill on it 4-5 times a week. About the only complaint I've ever heard, other than the price, was that it was hard to get grill marks on a steak but I get them fine so I don't worry about it.
If you have any other questions about them, let me know.

I have an original Oklahoma Joe's and haven't used it since getting my Hasty Bake. And it takes no time at all to fire it up using real hardwood charcoal, really about the same as heating up a gas grill (if you know what you're doing). I also mix in chunks of Hickory, Pecan, or Apple...depending on what I have at home.

Do some research on those Traeger pellets and you'll find they are "flavored" woods, not the real thing.

Dissing the electric grill ;). The traeger is not a precision instrument, but its the best one size fits all contraption I've ever seen. Besides, it has a remote control :D.

I just don't find monitoring a smoker for 4-6 hours fun. So I got a bunch of remote control wireless sensors (temperature control, meat therm, etc) and just watch it from whatever else I'm doing.

As for the pellets...

Traeger Pellets are all X wood mixed with Alder and then pelletized (read compacted from sawdust). They use Alder because it is the most consistent burning wood and allows for less heat fluctuation. I personally use pellets from a Lady that comes up from Arkansas for the NW BBQ Championships because her mixes are out of this world (Alder Base with Mesquite/Pecan etc).

check your pellets carefully as you're pouring them in the hopper...
my brother was warming up the traeger one day when the fire went out...
upon further investigation...he found a small piece of rubber v-belt had wedged in the auger feed mechanism....
it had wedged so tight...he had to dismantle the auger to remove it..
good thing it wedged....or his meat would have smelled a bit like burning tires....

I have a question for the Traeger owners: How fast do you burn through 20 lbs of pellets? I realize it depends on how often you're cooking and how hot you're grilling, but just looking for an idea of how many pounds you go through in a month?

I have the smaller version of that. It actually has a knockout to attach the smoker or charcoal sidebox to it...I haven't taken it that far yet though. I've only used it as a propane grill so far.
http://www.lowes.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?partNumber=296447-49769-3001&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3031229&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1
The whole reason I went with this grill was the previous one I bought at Lowes had been recalled. After a several grillings of ignoring a shrill noise that my recalled model had been making..I finally took it back to Lowes and they told me I was lucky I hadn't caught it on fire. Apparently someone had one like mine that exploded and caught on fire. Guess I got lucky. So, long story short, Lowes gave me $160 toward a replacement grill and I went with the Chargriller in the link above.

They (char grillers) smoke pretty well. Maintaining temp can be a little tough with the thin steel, but I made some bad *** ribs/brisket/sausage in that thing.
