View Full Version : Worst Casting Decisions in Movies

I can think of several:

Sofia Coppola in The Godfather III. She replaced Wynonna Ryder who had some mental issues during filming. Coppola was so bad she almost ruined an otherwise mediocre movie.

John Travolta as a WWII Army General in The Thin Red Line. Granted, it was a small part, but he just came off as John Travolta trying to play a general.

Don Rickles as a Casino Manager in Casino. Please. The love affair between Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone was downright gross and farfetched.

Emile Hirsch as the alpha dog drug dealer in Alpha Dog. He seemed more like just a little weasel and not exactly as tough or intimidating as his character called for.

OJ Simpson as an astronaut in Capricorn One. LOL!

John Malkovich as the terrifying Confederate bandit in Jonah Hex. WTF?

Shia LaBeouf in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Not that anyone else would have improved the movie.

Peter MacNicol as Stingo in Sophie's Choice. He'll always be Janosz Poha, the zany foreign museum curator, so how could we be expected to accept him in such a serious role?

Robert De Niro as the flashback Vito Corleone in The Godfather 2. He's no Marlon Brando, that's for sure.

Sir Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (and the subsequent Chamber of Secrets). He clearly was too old and feeble for the role, and this is borne out by Sir Michael Gambon's masterful depiction that will stand the test of time for all time. Don't get me wrong. I was sad when Richard Harris died and all, but it turned out for the best as far as the franchise's well-being was concerned.

When Jar Jar Binks is arguably the best character you could come up with in 3 films that's when you know you did a bad job. I don't like Jar Jar at all. But seriously there's nothing in those films that anyone could really care about.

The idea they had for remaking The Shining wasn't so bad. The first movie was great for what it was, but it wandered far afield from the book in several important points. But, what they wound up with was a made for tv mini-series, and we all know how good those have been since sometime in the late-70s.
