I was only 10 at the time but I was at the games with my dad. Terrible image and what a horrific crappy field. Gladly grass is back!

Stupid turf. I have seen sports blooper shows a few times, they always make sure to show that one. And we lost that game. Awful day.

I took my high school son on a campus visit just last Monday. That schooner sits in the Will Rogers room in the Student Union.

Our guide said OU was penalized for "delay of game" for that spill!

Cale Gundy + CU defender + concrete-like "turf" = concussed = loss.

I have a strip of that turf somewhere. You could use it to sand walls if you needed to.

I've heard rumors the Ruf/Nek queen wasn't wearing panties, and 75,000 saw her snooch that day. Truth or urban legend?

It's true, it very much resembled the rip in the turf.

funniest part was they used grey duct tape to fix that tear on national tv, haha

I was there as well, in the student section. I remember seeing the ice chest in the schooner go airborne and thinking that was odd right before the the RufNek bailed. I remember how miserable the game was, I missed the peep show and don't remember a delay of game flag.

I also remember hearing that this was the first game for those ponies.

Hey, it was the 90's. They couldn't afford the camo duct tape. :D

I think someone is crossing two different stories about the schooner...
There was delay of game penalty called on the schooner after a field goal in the Orange Bowl loss to Washington, then we missed the longer field goal.

Never understood how what should have been a dead ball penalty could take points off the board, but it did that night.

Wasn't THAT a perfect foreshadowing of how the 90's would turn out. :(

I was an OU student then and was at the game. It felt like a nightmare. The Schooner incident was symbolic of that game, season, and era of OU football.

The funniest part was the that Ruf Nek Queen jumped right up and walked away (perhaps because of the aforementioned underwear rumor)

but the dude, who you can tell was fine when jumped up, laid there and had the trainers come out to attend to him.

as I recall, one of the guys in the back broke their arm, don't remember how badly the driver was hurt, but he did get hurt. And no, if I remember correctly, it was traditional for the Queen to go without underwear.

Seeing as how she was the RufNek Queen, it's possible 75,000 saw her snooch before that day.:D

Maybe it's because I was only 12 when I watched that game and we lost anyway, but you're absolutely right. I had never thought of that before. What was the reasoning for them taking points off the board after the fact?

Switzer explains the refs screwed OU on ineligible player substitution due to jersey numbers. That penalty nullified the field goal. Then when the schooner runs on the field is a dead ball delay of game which took us back more yards.

ok another truth or rumor:

it said "F**K MIAMI" on the bottom of the schooner?

go see the original schooner in the union - look on the bottom and you'll get your answer.:D

the driver broke his arm that day; all others were OK.

both ponies were very young, new, and fast. the driver took the usual route, but the ponies were too fast for the normal turn. on the turf, those 2 were too fast to out-run - even pulling the schooner. if memory serves, those 2 ponies were retired not too long ago.

My Dad and I were in the South EZ that day. I was watching the Schooner through my binocs and saw the flip very well. Didn't see the other...

One thing to note- the crown on the old fake grass field was very high. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Another memory from that game was Cale smugly ripping off his helmet after a big play and running to the sidelines. Glad they made that illegal.

When I joined Pride in 1998, the people who were in Pride then called that day Black Saturday because it basically began the rest of what was to be 90's OU football.
