two of my favorite quotes from the article...

“We’ve concluded as atheists there is no heaven and there’s no hell,” he said.

“It implies that heaven actually exists,” Silverman told Fox News Radio.

“When you think you’ve heard it all, you haven’t,” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz told Fox News Radio. “These seven brave souls who put their lives on the line and ultimately gave up the most precious gift that could be given, believe me are in heaven for serving us so admirably,” he said.

This was my favorite part. I mean who wouldn't base their beliefs of the afterlife on the opinion of the current Brooklyn Borough President?

Does the street sign:

a. Have a secular purpose?

---Yes, it is signage and performs the same functions as other signs like MLK Blvd and others. It honors certain people and provides location information.

b. Is the sign's primary effect or purpose to either advance or inhibit religion?

---It is a pretty weak argument that this sign's primary effect or purpose is to advance religion. It may advance the idea that there is a heaven, but to say that the sign's primary effect or purpose is to advance the idea of heaven is pretty weak. The sign's primary purpose is to pay respects to those who sacrificed their lives and to provide directions and location information.

c. Does the sign cause the government to be excessively entangled in religion?

---Heavens no. I mean "no-hope-after-this-life-and-only-a-dirt-nap" no.

The above questions are the Lemon test and provide the framework by which the court will determine the Constitutionality of the sign. If either question two or three is answered in the affirmative or question one is answered in the negative, then the sign is a violation of the Establishment Clause. I have a hard time seeing how question two or three can reasonably answered in the affirmative or question one can be answered in the negative.

"heaven" can simply be defined as a better place than you are right now, or a place without pain, fear, worry, etc.

That word isn't necessarily tied to religion in all cases.

The atheist malcontents would counter that by saying that it still endorses the concept of a metaphysical state and therefore advances religion. Their argument is still a loser in my opinion.

And all this goes to show is that some atheists are just as stupid as some Christians and some Muslims about what they choose to let offend them.

From the Christians who decided to put up the sign knowing full well that some hypersensitive atheists would gritch to the atheists to the Christians who are now gritching about oversensitive atheists, everyone involved is an a-hole.

I get why the atheists are doing what they're doing. They're worried about incrementalism, i.e., Christians of the future using the fact that no one complained about this issue to starting to name streets after characters in the Bible or something equally silly.

Can we just agree that the government is secular, period, and move on?

Easy peasy.

Darn it. They are on to my Master Plan. There is a street that intersects with Caesar Chavez Blvd. I was going to get it renamed to Jesus Is The Way. If, and when, the ACLU complained, I was going to tell them that the street name was pronounced Hey-Soos.

An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, "What would you want to talk about?"

"Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly.

"OK," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"

The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea."

To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death, when you don't know sh*t?"

And then she went back to reading her book.
