So I was in Dallas today and I must have been very suggestible because I heard an infomercial on the radio for a Vitamin D product and it really got me interested in taking more Vitamin D. Supposedly there are a lot of studies coming out that show how awesome Vitamin D is and that we aren't getting nearly enough of it unless we are roofers or some other profession that is out in the sun all day.

My understanding is that the RDA set by the gubmint is to help avoid deficiency and doesn't necessarily describe the optimum intake of Vitamin D.

I got home and found that I'm only taking 400 IU of Vitamin D. This product they were pushing has 5,000IU. Wow 5,000 IU!

Here's the product they were pushing: http://www.purityproducts.com/purityEcommerce/control/productDetail?productId=dr-cannells-advanced-vitamin-d

I'll bet we could have a big fight about Vitamin D if we really wanted to. Let's get this party started!

Start fight now. GO!!

Reminds me of a common saying "you get vitamin D from the sunlight". As if we get smacked by a bunch of vitamin D carying photons. Ouch!!!! :D

This is actually an interesting question.

The levels of Vitamin D required and are safe aren't agreed upon.

In 2010 the Institute of Medicine increased their recommendation for Vitamin D supplements from 400IU to 600IU for adults and to 800IU for seniors. But some very reliable sources (such as the Linus Pauling Institute) see even this as overly conservative and are recommending at least 2000IU a day.

But the level of 5000IU a day is more tricky. The IOM set a safety level of 4000IU a day. And that was based on their idea that 5000IU a day was the safest max with a 20 percent uncertainty. But there is decent reason to believe that this is too conservative and should be higher. Quite a few respectable organizations are saying that 10,000IU is where guaranteed toxicity is.

If it were me, I would be looking at 1000 to 3000 IU daily. Other than the IOM, this seems to be the consensus.

You do get Vitamin D from Sunlight. Specifically UVB. When UVB hits the skin 7-Dehydrocholesterol present in the skin turns into Vitamin D.

Under normal circumstances, I would not reccomend Vitamin D in the summertime to somebody living in Oklahoma. It's just not necessary.

I take 1000 IU 3 or 4 times a week. It can't hurt.

How much do we need?

2000 IU/day is generally considered a pretty safe, yet helpful dosage. Some people use way more (like 10,000 IU/day) without negative side effects, but it's not perfectly safe. And no, despite the really high numbers, it's not very much to take. 2000 IU is about the size of a small pea.

Let's get this thread back on the tracks, shall we?

About 6-12 inches worth. Animal Vitamin D is an acceptable substitute.

The word on the street is that the fat soluble vitamins need to be consumed with fat in order to be absorbed properly. Some say that saturated fat is best type of fat for this. Vitamin D is one of the fat soluble vitamins.

This changes everything. So I guess its hello coconut oil. This thread is getting more controversial by the minute.

Along with a multi-vitamin, I take fish oil and vitamin D every day. I read in Men's Health that those 3 are the most important supplements to take daily.

Too much vitamin D is also known to cause cancer. 400 - 1000 IU per day is a good amount and most doctors and nutritionists would tell you 2000 IU per day is way too much. There are also several food sources (mostly fortified) that contain vitamin D such as milk.

Read "The 4-Hour Body". Lots of good infromation in there on what supplements/vitamins to take depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Lots of text book answers here, many of them debatable.
Our skin will produce 20,000-30,000IU with 15 minutes of full sun exposure.
most of us really need more D(sun block, inside jobs, winter months).
D deficiency has been directly linked to cancer.
Most of us would do well to take higher levels of D.
D3 is the best form to take IMO.
There is a LOT of research now that suggests that the upper limits of 400-2000 is too low and that 4000-10000IU should be the new upper limits.
If someone decides to take higher levels of D, they should monitor it along the way because everyone's needs are different.
I'll repeat that, you really should monitor your levels if you supplement. Somewhere between 40-70 ng/ml is optimal. 1000IU per day will only raise levels by 10ng/ml over 3-4 months so if your levels are 15 then 1000IU just "ain't" gonna do it.

I have low vit D and take 2000 units a day supplement. My most recent physical, the Dr. said if I wasn't taking the supplements, he would have me tested for cancer. said for me 2K was fine but not to take any more.

That's actually pretty solid advice...which is surprising considering what I've seen of Men's Health.

We take Juice Plus supplements which have little or no Vitamin D is why I asked. We used to take Melalueca Vitamins as they had a very decent absorbency and IMO made me feel pretty good. Once they pissed us off....we quit and until we found Juice Plus...I hadn't taken another vitamin that I felt made a difference, other than when I had knee surgery a few years ago and the therapist told me about ACE's. I went to Akin's and this nice gal hooked me up with the right amounts they said I should take and my recovery was very quick.

I have a study right here on my desk from June 2010 that tested 10 OTC brands for Vitamin D content and the average was 33.5% of the advertised dose. Quality matters a LOT in vitamins.

I figured their are a bunch of really crappy products that all you do is poop them out and cause a strain on your liver and kidneys.
