Steeper Big 12 exit fees could be coming

http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/29740/big-12-examining-more-severe-exit-fees

Dan Beebe and everyone else associated with the Big 12 has trumpeted the league's newfound unity after last year's near-death experience.

Eight teams had an opportunity to leave the Big 12 for another league, but ultimately six of those chose to stay.

Upon their exit, Nebraska and Colorado had a combined $16.1 million in conference revenue withheld from their paychecks, a penalty Beebe called "historic," and one unmatched by any other in the history of college sports.

In the future, it could become even more difficult for teams to leave the Big 12.

"We’re still in the process of studying whether we need to adjust the bylaws that we have, in regard to withdrawal fees," Beebe said. "I think that’ll be carefully reviewed."

The Big 12 hasn't made any changes to the bylaws, which state that the conference withholds 50 percent of the conference revenue if a team gives at least two years notice before it ends its conference membership. The shorter the notice becomes, the more revenue is withheld. If less than a year's notice is given, but more than six months, teams have 90 percent withheld. If less than six months' notice is given, a program has 100 percent of its revenue withheld.

What changes become enacted are still very much in flux, but Beebe senses support for making the withdrawal fees more severe.

"There’s a high degree of interest in looking at that and anything else that will ensure the long-term stability of the conference," he said.

The Big 12's recent 13-year, $1.2 billion television deal was a big step toward the goal, ensuring that every Big 12 program would be cashing significantly higher paychecks at the end of the season.

Making sure less of those paychecks land in the hands of possibly departing members in the future could be the next step.

Who's going to collect if the Big XII tanks?

Beebe and obama are tied in the economic dunce awards.

Thanx.

Yeah, if the Big 12 is gone, who gets the "fees"? Also, I doubt Nebraska or Colorado care about 16 million in fees when they're making money hand over fist in their new conferences...

Yeah, if the Big 12 is gone, who gets the "fees"? Also, I doubt Nebraska or Colorado care about 16 million in fees when they're making money hand over fist in their new conferences...

1- Nebraska loses regular games with Big 12 foes that it has had longtime rivalries with, including Mizzou, KU, Colorado and Oklahoma.

2- Nebraska loses part of Big 12 revenue share and will also get a lesser share of Big Ten revenues initially.

3- Nebraska loses prestigious AAU membership, but not because Big 12 members did not support them in the vote.

4- Faced with a new football landscape and schemes they are not used to scoring against or defending against, Nebraska football faces a difficult transition, similar to when Miami (FL) moved from the Big Least to ACC.

5- Nebraska, for the first time in three seasons, is not part of a conference championship and therefore is not in contention for a BCS bowl.

6- Nebraska becomes less relevant in football than when Bill Callahan was coach and Steve Pederson was athletic director.

Bugeaters: But dammit, at least we gots our moneys!

 Will money really make up for the sh!t they're about to go through and what they've just been through to get there?

What does Beebe do if Texas and OU tell him to shove it? He's not exactly in a strong leverage position.

Oklahoma and Texas ARE the Big "XII"

I'll say this, the year that Mangino put the asswhuppin on the Huskers was like watching Ralphie beat up Scut Farkus. Tears and flailing arms making up for decades of abuse.

The current clause stated that if a certain number of teams left then the penalty was waived.

Leaders/Legends. I don't have that down yet but I think it sounds a little dippy but I prefer: East/West or something like that! It's not my intention to pick on Texas, But, just to point out that huskers are excited on our new venture. Could get rough! *GRIN*!

When I stopped in a bar in Kearney they wanted to cry and hug me. Everybody over the age of 30 was very upset about moving to the Big Ten.

Sounds to me like the league is a least 2 years behind on the payments, in order to meet the above guide line.

Word. Nebrasky fans for the most part seemed to want to hug us more than beat us last December, like they were losing a dear old friend or something.

But perhaps, this was part of that nice-nice-nice act designed to make us take our guard down a little while they husk our corn and eat our bugs as we unsuspectingly look away. :P

All right, let's just get everything out there and get it over with before it inevitably happens. Love you Husker Nation. Let's hope this allows you to move on:

The Big 12 has not been kind to you and we all know it. We've seen the championship losses, the embarrassing defeats and the oranges reign down on you to provide Cally a chance to preserve the non-shutout streak a bit longer. The Big Ten will be no different and we both know it.

Have fun, big red...

I always enjoyed Nebbish, the rivalry and their fans. ITs a shame this rivalry wont continue.

But clearly they HATE HATE HATE the whorns. In a different way than us

We of course hate them because they are idiots who believe they have won every national championship since 1965.

Nebbish hates them because the whorns follow the Golden Rule...you know this one...."He who has all the gold makes the rules"

In the 2009-10 B12 Champeenship game, as much as I hate it...it was the right call to add 1 second to the clock at the end of the game. Bugeaters are convinced that Dan Beebe called down, with Deloss Dodds squeezing his sack, to the field and demanded a second be added.

Its kind of thinking that makes the Huskers feel like they are heading further North with their "bird" shooting directly at Austin.

solid. What does LA stand for? I've been a Sooner fan probably before you were born! I also tell that on husker sites! I know it's a Sooner site but, I don't feel unwelcome here!

Some good football fans post here and I know that there will always be a few unhappy folks!
