View Full Version : Can you think of a good reason to have a phone in church?

Maybe this has been posed here before. Forgive me - not on this side of the board too much - if it has been.

I'm just wondering what the mentality is out there on this one.

I know that many women bring their purses into church, and I guess it could be in there, but is there a legitimate reason to bring it with you?

Have any of you noticed this kind of behavior in your church? (Using it in any way)

What gives?

I've been to 3 different funerals where some dumb B left her phone on.

At 1st i were thinkin a Land line in the Church Office, That Yes in case of emergency. A CELL phone? no way unless its on Vibrate and they get up quietly and go somewhere to take the call. Or better yet just Iggy it for awhile.

I'm just wondering what call needs to be taken in the middle of church.

I mean - it's an hour. Maybe an hour 1/2 if you guys are really getting the worship on. Can't what ever in the hell it is - wait?

I'm sorry - I know that I've been called oppositional . . . but

How do you know it's an emergency? (Until you pick up the phone, or look at it)

I mean - if you're expecting an emergency - maybe you should just stay at home and be prepared for that emergency. You know - and pray at home.
I think that God would be cool with that.

I take mine to church because there is a great Bible app you can use. I can find things quickly on it and easily compare different translations when I find a scripture that is not very clear to me. I also let the 4 year old play angry birds to keep him happy while I listen to the sermon.

If you get 10 calls and 10 texts in a 5 minute span, you can probably assume it's an emergency. I think God would understand if you took a peek at your phone to see what is up.

I think part of it also has to do with the movement of churches to a more casual setting.

There would have never been clapping, blue jeans, electric guitar, or power points in church when I was growing up.

I wish I could find an old school baptist church here in Houston :(

I always take my phone. It's turned on silent, though. It's just so I can have it afterwards, though. In theory there would be a few times when I might possibly put it on vibrate, but I've never experienced one of those situations. I would have to know of the possible emergency beforehand, though, and that potential problem might keep me out of church for that Sunday anyway.

I'll echo whomever mentioned having a Bible app. I actually prefer reading it off my iPhone cause I can get more than one translation quickly. Of course the phone must be on silent.

Sooner_Tuf
6/15/2011, 02:17 AM
It's pretty simple I guess. They take the phone to church with them because they want to.

I guess it depends on what all is going on but I normally have my phone with me everywhere I go. Obviously there are times I would want to have it on silent and other times when it should be shut off.

It's really just a matter of using your head. Most of my calls are work related but I suppose that isn't anymore important than a teenager that wants to be connected at all times.

I don't understand why some people care what other people do. As long as they aren't disrupting something it shouldn't be a problem.

Nothing makes me more pissed off when I am listening to the sermon, and someone's cellphone goes off. At the very top of the service leaflet, there are several reminders, one of them being "please turn off your cell phone." And last Sunday, for the first time in a long time, no one's cell phone went off during the morning's services. That's a miracle in my book.

sanantoniosooner

I'll give you the reasons I take my phone and you can decide if they are good ones yourself.(in no particular order)

1-Bible app

2-Since I don't wear a watch it also keeps time for me.

3-Most anyone that would call me KNOWS I'm in church and 9/10 call I would get would be an emergency.

4-My wife leads the worship team and sometimes for the altar service a song comes to mind that she doesn't have the cords for and I can look them up quickly and discretely.

5-Sometimes I pray with a person at church that I want to contact later in the week to see how they are doing. It helps if I can put their number in my phone.

6-It has video and camera capabilities that actually come in handy once in a while.

7-Sometimes people call me at the last minute for a ride and live close enough to go get.

8-I've augmented what was preached on by some quick research on the phone.

9-I've actually preached from notes on it myself.

10-So I can keep up with the latest rapture news;)

What I DON'T get is people wearing their bluetooth. If people listened as intently to God as they do other people there would be a lot less problems in their lives.

Mine...I put it on vibrate where I can see if it vibrates. It lights up. If its a friend or family member, they usually know when I'm at mass, so if they ever called at that time, which hardly ever happens, I would text them back and ask "I'm at church...Is this a medical emergency? Its happened once that it was. One of my best friends appendix burst when I was at mass and she was in the back of an ambulance and had asked her neighbor to call me to meet her at the ER.

Thanks to all who commented. Looks like I am officially old at 41.

I don't like it when someone is "using" their phone in a movie theater. The light it gives off is distracting. Whether they got a text / call on silent / checking the time - it is a distraction to me, and takes away from my experience - maybe not yours. Now - in this case - it's entertainment - that we both paid for. I thought that most people would agree with that, but judging (yes, I'm judging) by the responses, I could very well be wrong.

I also have the bible app on my phone, so I suppose that I stand corrected - that-that is a reason to bring the phone to church, because it may be more convenient / quicker than flipping back and forth through the actual Book. Although, I do not do this in church. Not judging those of you that do. (Just wondering if those of you that use it for this purpose would check to see who texted you-if you received one during the sermon - would you read it? What about a voice mail? Listen to it? Just curious.)

I posed the question because I've seen / heard the phone activity many times during the sermons, and it is distracting. I'd also add that it is distasteful disrespectful, and rude. (I'm talking about USING your phone here) Texting several times during the sermon - having it on VIBRATE is not the same as silent, Checking it.

The premise of this thread seems a little intolerant and a little judgmental. Just sayin.

Yeah, based on all of those things - I'd say that I'm intolerant and judgemental.

I am not really "church folk", but I do miss the reverence that used to be associated with going to church.

I don't mind if clapping and jeans happen, I would just prefer to attend a church where people still take the time to treat it as formal ceremony (The patrons, not the leaders).

I still don't know what I believe, but if I go to church I want to feel like it is a holy place..I just don't get that from contemporary music and strip mall locations, or power points in basketball stadiums. I ain't no snake-shaker, but is a tie really that much to ask for?

Yes, I do believe church is just a show. A person's relationship with "God" is personal. It should be a pious "show", however (My Opinion). If you are going to a place of worship, what else would you call it beside a "show" of gratitude?

In other words, I don't think that God is talking to anyone, anytime. If you are going to a funeral (also a "show" of reverence) I think that it is rude to go smelling like $h!t...even if "Ol' Grampa" had a colostomy bag.

Exactly what is wrong with "me" pining for a church experience that "I" like?

Absolutely nothing. I think that's the toughest part facing churchgoers. You want something that works with your belief system and a place you feel comfortable. Every church family is a little different, even within the same religious group.
