Kind of how we go. But for some people compatible political beliefs are more important than compatible religious beliefs. All depends on your personal deal breakers.

We both lean left, but we don't agree on everything. When we don't agree, we usually talk it out. If one of us can't convince the other within a short period of time, we drop it. Luckily, it's not like sports for me. I can let politics (for the most part) go. If she were into sports and we disagreed, it would be on!

I am classic libertarian with centrist flourishes. She's blindly liberal. It typically works since most the hot-button issues are social issues, where we are aligned. The problem arises, though, especially since she believes the federal government SHOULD be the decision maker.

I guarantee you I could ask her many questions about fiscal policy where she'd answer in the conservative/centrist vein. She is just too tribal to admit it. Like jk above.

Unfortunately this is not true for many. I would argue that for many politics has replaced religion. There was an interesting study that showed the less religious a person was the more they "believed in" and revered government or saw government as a potential savior. Essentially we are talking about people of the Liberal/socialist/statist bent for the most part. They have traded the metaphysical magic type of religion for a secular "feel good" one.

I'm a borderline anarcho-capitalist atheist so where do I fall?

I've dated some very religious-right girls and some Obama lovers. They respected my views and I respected theirs. It's as simple as that. We had several debates, were able to keep it civil, and then had sex.

That perfectly describes what has happened in Thailand. The North and Northeast are red shirts and Bangkok and the South are yellow shirts.

It certainly didn't help things any when some yellow shirt leaders and Bangkok elitists/bureaucrats said that people in the North and Northeast are just simple farmers - too poor, too uneducated to wisely select representatives and that democracy should be suspended.

Nope is a rabid red shirt. Sometimes I think that that is all he cares about.

I'm moderately red shirt (maybe pink shirt). But I have had to promise family and friends that I wouldn't attend any more political rallies when there is a risk of violence.

For anyone planning to visit Thailand in about a month, be mindful that it could get really ugly if the red shirt parties win the July 3 general election and then prevented from forming a government by either the military or Bangkok yellow shirt judges.

Badger, I am the political black sheep of my family too. My mom had previously never allowed politics to be discussed in her house, but I suspect that she and my dad held very similar views as conservative Democrats. Now, she and I get into it all of the time. It is her house and I just have to leave when she turns on Fox News.
