Looks like our curse might be at work again (& overtime at that if this is true). Seems like when we schedule a big name team, they're good at the time of the contract being signed, but down by the time the games are actually played (i.e. Washington, Oregon, & Bama (although they did win 10 they year they played in Norman)). FSU looks like they might've dodged this bullet for a change though. Hope the Bucks get all this straightened out by the time our set w/ them comes up because although it'd increase the chances of a loss in there, there's also nothing I like better than a good OOC matchup.

Actually with how slow the NCAA moves, they'll like be in the middle of their penalties by the time we play them.

There is alternatives to the death penalty that drives the point home

Make Ohio State play all of their games on the road for two years + bowl ban + ship reduction

USC will be back in about 6-7 years. Look at recent history. takes 5-15 years to bring back a program with the right coaching hire. OU about a decade, Bama like 7 years.

Death Penalty. If it is true.

wont happen to a major college. NCAA would get sued and lose..why? Because of DAMAGES. People think they can file a law suit and win because they are appalled at something that shocks them, but it doesnt matter unless there are damages....and if there are, its a winner.

Can you imagine the financial damages to tOSU if they cant fill that horseshoe 8 Saturdays a year. Unreal. So they'd get their pitbulls on NCAA an probably win...and the NCAA wants none of that.

NO if there is every a death penalty again, and I doubt it, it'll be for a small school. Because of the legal ramifications...and so that the NCAA can make an example without putting a brand name out of business

I THINK it was Jerry Tarkanian who once said....."the NCAA is so mad at Kentucky, that Cleveland State will get 2 more years of probation" So someone may get the DP at some point, but it'll be somone who doesnt matter

That's what I was thinking. I know they cover a lot of games. Now there have been a good number of games where they were say 30-40+ favorites at home against the smaller sister Ohio schools that ended up winning by 20 or so. Those games always made me scratch my head but that's college football. Those games would also be perfect games to shave. Comfy wins but not covers. If someone wants to pin this allegation on them, those are the games they should concentrate on.

How is this a conspiracy against tOSU? I mean, it's not like ESPN or Yahoo went around digging crap up like against USC. This was a federal investigation that the NCAA just went "Oh, that's interesting. Let's have a chat."

Recent point shaving or a little bit earlier? I don't do a lot of betting but tOSU didn't do a lot of losing really. If it was from the 2010 season, I could see some of these games being the culprits of point shaving just so tOSU doesn't beat the spread:

24–13 at Illinois
20–17 at Iowa

In 2009:
31–27 Navy
18–26 losing at Purdue
27–24 overtime Iowa

In 2008:
26-14 Ohio
28-10 Troy
34-21 Minny
20-17 at Wisky
16-3 Purdue
6-13 loss to Penn State
30-20 at Illinois

Sooo... can we assume the point shavin' year was 2008? Man, there were some WTF scores in there. That was the year they lost the Fiesta Bowl to UT, 24-21.

Because it's fun, more eyebrow raising scores:

In 2007:
20–2 Akron
23–7 at Purdue (why is it always Purdue?)
28–21 loss to Illinois at home

In 2006:
35-12 Northern Illinois
17-10 at Illinois

In 2005:
34-14 Miami OH
27-6 SDSU
10-17 loss at Penn State

In 2004:
24-21 Marshall
27-33 overtime loss at Northwestern
13-24 loss to Wisconsin
7-33 loss at Iowa
17-24 loss at Purdue

In 2003:
16-13 SDSU
44-38 NCSt three overtimes
24-17 Bowling Green
10-17 loss at Wisky
21-20 at Penn State
21-35 loss at Michigan (the last time Ohio State lost to Michigan I think)

In 2002:
19–14 at Wisky
13–7 Penn State
10–6 at Purdue
23–16 overtime at Illinois

In 2001, they weren't ranked at all in sweater vest's first season, so not sure there's much there.

The most questionably years seem to be 2008 and 2003.

you were warned :P

I think the skeletons that are going to come out of tOSU's closet are going to scar college sports for awhile.

Just keep in mind, there's a reason that the first person to defend UofMichigan about their practice violations was Jim Tressel. He didn't want the NCAA digging in his backyard.

Northwestern, Toledo, ASU, BC...probably others...

Sooner_Tuf
6/7/2011, 09:28 PM
I don't think tOSU is on track to get the death penalty at this point. But I think this new guy at the NCAA would damn sure give it if need be. The only times it has been used is when a school repeatedly does the same thing while under sanctions for the violation.

SMU didn't get the death penalty so much for they did but because they continued to so even after they have been caught repeatedly. SMU never thought the NCAA would really do it.

If tOSU did get the death penalty on what grounds would they sue that they could possibly win? tOSU may have a lot of money but the NCAA does also and they have the power of voluntary participation on their side. If the entire Big 10 stood up and threatened to withdraw that might back off the NCAA. But I don't see that happening, the rest of the Big 10 would likely be pointing and laughing.

At this point though I would think they are a long long way from getting the death penalty. I do think they might just be on track to be the worst punished school in history if even half these rumors are true.

Point shaving may happen in other sports (ie Basketball maybe Baseball) but I don't think that is very likely in Football. About the only player that could really do it would be a QB and even then the Defense might still make up for the "mistakes". If you involved a bunch of players someone would be talking.
