Ohio State’s odds to win the BCS title skyrocketed from +2,500 (25/1) to +5,000 at the Las Vegas Hilton on Monday, as news broke of head coach Jim Tressel’s resignation.

When odds to win the 2012 BCS title opened in mid-January, the Buckeyes were listed among the second-tier of favorites at 20/1.

Even as more news of the severity of the OSU's alleged infractions, the MGM Mirage sportsbook received enough action on Ohio State to move them all the way down to 10/1. According to race and sportbook supervisor Craig Sasamura, they have written the third most betting tickets on Ohio State to win it all. The Mirage moved the Buckeyes BCS odds back up to 20/1 Monday.

“We had some folks bet the Buckeyes recently at 14-to-1,” Sasamura told Covers.com on Monday. “In terms of number of tickets written, they’re right there with Notre Dame.”

Because Buckeye backers haven't had enough bad news lately, there's this -- Even if Ohio State is ruled ineligible for postseason play, all action plays on future bets, deeming all future bets on the Buckeyes worthless. It says on the bottom of the odds sheet at Mirage: “All bets are action as long as the BCS declares a champion. Odds are subject to change. Please check with clerk for current odds. No refunds.”

Odds on Next Buckeye Coach

Come August, Ohio State’s big-name coaching wish list could be a giant pipe dream.

Ohio State isn’t expected to find out its punishment for its violations and the cover-up by Tressel in August.

The NCAA hammered Southern California with the harshest penalties handed out since SMU.

USC received a two-year bowl ban and a 40-percent reduction in scholarships over three years for violations by Reggie Bush. Ohio State’s violations look worse and were much more wide spread.

While you never know what the NCAA will do, the Buckeyes could be headed for worse penalties than the Trojans.

What veteran coach is going to want to take on the task of leading the Buckeyes through that period of their illustrious history?

Yet, as the news broke of Tressel’s Memorial Day resignation, Urban Meyer began trending on Twitter and was instantly anointed the betting favorite to be the next Buckeye coach. Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, Arizona’s Mike Stoops, ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden, Nebraska’s Bo Pellini and Michigan State’s Marc D’Antoni are other popular names out there.

Bettors will miss Tressel

No doubt about it, the Vest covered.

In his 10-season tenure, Tressel went 74-48-2 (59.6 percent) against the spread, including an impressive 18-5-1 ATS run over the last two seasons.
He owned the Big Ten, covering the spread in 60 percent (49-30-2) of his conference games. And he was especially potent bouncing back after a loss. Under Tressel, the Buckeyes went 14-5 ATS after a loss.

For what it’s worth, Meyer is 74-43-3 ATS (61.6 percent) in coaching career at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida.
