View Full Version : Do You Have A Right To Recline?

Fight over reclining seat diverts flight(CNN) -- Simmering air travel tensions bubbled over this weekend when a United Airlines passenger smacked a fellow flier over an unwelcome seat recline, The Washington Post reports.

Air Force fighter jets escorted the Ghana-bound United Airlines flight back to Washington Dulles International Airport shortly after takeoff Sunday night, the Post reported.

United Airlines has not returned CNN's calls for details on the incident.

Not long after departing the airport, a passenger lowered his seat into the space of a fellow flier and a fight broke out. A flight attendant and another passenger tried to break up the scuffle, sources told the Washington Post on the condition of anonymity.

Is reclining your seat a right?

Airport police met the flight at Dulles and determined that charges were not warranted, according to a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

The flight was delayed until Monday, according to the Post.

The disagreement over seat reclining is the not the first to get physical. In November, a disgruntled passenger grabbed a reclining flier's right ear with enough force to knock his glasses off, according to a complaint filed in that case.

How much do airline seats recline, anyway? 1 inch? 2 inches?

NO you DONT have the right to lean back. 2 inches is not going to make you that much more comfortable, but it WILL make the person behind you more uncomfortable.

NO DOUBT!! Not only is there no leg room, but you have to keep your arms glued to your sides so as not to elbow the crap out of the person next to you.

If the guy in front of me reclines his seat all the way then I'll recline my just a tad bit to give me a little room. Other than that I won't recline.

I don't mind people reclining just a bit. When they think they have a right to go all the way back then it ticks me off. If that happens I'll make sure I continue to knee the back of their seat throughout the flight.

It seems to me that the younger fliers are actually the more considerate. It's the upper middle aged ones that seem to be the jerks (from my experience). It's probably just that baby boomer mentality...

A friend of my sister-in-law put up a picture on Facebook of the bare feet of the passenger behind her, wedged between her seat and the side of the plane. I can honestly say that I am not 6'4" and it's still very annoying to have to fold my arms and legs into that tiny little space. It would be so much easier if I could just check my limbs with the baggage and pick them up on arrival.

To answer the original question, I have a right to recline as long as it isn't going to put me in someone else's space. If I recline into someone's knees, then I deserve to get kicked in the head.

I'm 6'2" and if I'm in coach, I'm gonna recline....putting your knees on the seat wont stop it because the seats nowdays dont really recline, they only tilt about an inch r two at the top. If you are siting with your feet flat on the floor and your knees up to your chest, you're not comfortable anyway and you dont know how to sit in an airline seat. If you need more legroom, pony up the cash for a first class seat or pay the extra $25 for an exit row or bulkhead seat. But dont try to tell me that you get to control your seat and my seat, because you dont. I paid for a seat and it has a recline button... if I want to tilt it, I will.

Another complaint I have is how they always insist that smaller bags go under the seat in front of you. I want that space for my feet.

I understand if someone brings two carry on bags then the small one should go under the seat but I'll be damned if I'm going to get punished for paying for checked luggage and only bringing on a small carry-on bag. As I see it I'm doing everyone a favor already by carrying something that can be loaded and unloaded quickly and takes up little room in the overhead baggage...

agree with the reclining issue - i've had a drink dumped in my lap, had somebody's back on my knees - but i wont hesitate to say something

what drives me crazy though is when the person behind you has to get up - and uses the back of your seat to pull them up....pulling it back sharply and releasing it just as quickly

how the hell do these people get out of their chairs/sofa's at home without having a crutch in front of them

Looking at the logistics of it, I'm pretty sure the actual discomfort of keeping my knees in the back of the seat would be worse than the perceived loss of space that is really just jedi mind tricking me into being a whiny baby.

You want to know why the knuckleheads grab the top of the seat? Because the idiot in front of them has reclined all the way back and there is no room to exit. They have no choice but to grab the seat for balance as they contort their body in an attempt to exit.

Or, if they're like me, when the guy in front reclines all the way I become very passive agressive - grab the seat and shake it when getting up, constantly shoving my knee into the seat, etc.

Dallas to Frankfurt, rockin' it in coach with Typhoid Mary behind me.

Apparently her non-english speaking son was upset that I reclined my chair ever so slightly on the 'OMG IT NEVER STOPS' leg of the flight as he made it a point to bury his knees and pound the everloving **** out of the back of my chair for the whole stinking haul. Never mind his mom is puking up a lung every ten seconds, never mind I can literally smell her breath as she keels over in the chair as she does so, never mind I've made an effort to NOT bury the chair in his lap because I'm concerned with the walking bag of virulence sitting next to him. Stack a pile of dirty looks and the ol' 'grab the back of your chair and rattle your skull' trick as he ran hotlaps between his herpe-infested mom and the sh*tter on top of all that.

So tall people? Go f*ck yourselves. I'm reclining. Make an effort and we can find a comfortable middle ground, no sweat. Be a dongsmoker and I'll sideglance your wife's boobs as my seatback rests in your lap.

What all of you "knees in the back tough guys" fail to recognize is that like I said earlier, the seats nowadays dont really recline, they tilt. The top of the seat back moves back about 2" while the bottom of the seat back actually shifts forward a bit. And it doesn't even affect your precious little ****ing knees if you have enough sense to sit like you should...with your legs extended below the seat in front. Over the past 30 years I've logged somewhere in the ball park of 2-3 million air miles and I've reclined my seat on each and every flight shortly after takeoff until the double gong when we are on approach. No one behind me has ever complained. And if you think that sticking your knees against the seat back in front will prevent the tilt (in coach), your wrong. Unless of course, your knees come up to somewhere near the headrest, in which case, you're just a freak of nature and ought to have enough sense to book an exit row. I'm 6'2" and yeah, it's damned cramped sitting in the back of the plane. A guy 6'4" cant be that much more uncomfortable than me. But I wouldn't even consider telling the person in front of me that they cant tilt their seat back in order to gain a little comfort.

I have a question for you badasses that think you can tell people what to do with their seats: When an obese person shows up to take the seat next to you, do you tell them that they cant sit in their seat unless they keep all their lard between the arm rests? Because there are lots and lots of Americans that are wider than the armrests and their asses spill over into the seat next to them. What do you tough guys say to the fat woman when she plops down next to you on a full flight? You threaten to kick her *** if she touches you with her fat?

They do recline enough to make you unable to open your laptop if you are sitting directly behind the reclinee.

And would I say something to someone who was oozing over into my seat? Hellz yes. I paid for the whole damn seat and I will use it. I'm claustrophobic, and people on planes getting in my space do not tend to bring out my sweet side. I'll stay out of your space, and you will stay out of mine as well.

this, if i'm trying to use the tray table to work or read - its impossible if the person in front is fully reclining

Bull****. I use my laptop every time I fly and I can open it whether the seat in front is reclined or not. If they recline in front of me, I only have to move my laptop a couple of inches closer to me to have it fully opened.

Unless you're flying SW or UA/Continental, you would only succeed in hurting the fat lady's feelings. SW, UA and CO make obese people pay for two seats in coach, but TTBOMK, they are the only ones that do. The key is how they define obese. There are lots and lots of fat people who dont fit their definition of obese, yet they still spill over both arm rests.
And incidentally, I feel the same way about my space, and the space that my seat is built for and intended to recline in, is mine, just as the reclining space of the seat in front of me belongs to the person that paid for that seat.

Complain to the airlines and have them remove the reclining seats...I wonder why an airline would spend additional money on a reclining seat if you aren't supposed to recline the seat?

The least they should do is post a warning sign stating that you should check and see if you have a complainer behind you...

I purchased a 14.5 inch screen pc because I travel alot. It is lighter and more compact than larger models. But I also have a 15.5 inch isn't that much bigger, and I also use it on an aircraft with ease. If you have something larger than a 15.5", maybe you should consider getting a more compact model and a pair of reading glasses for when you travel. You're prolly giving yourself back problems from lugging that big beast around anyway....and you'll save yourself the aggravation of getting pissed off when I recline my seat in front of you :D

Dont need to....want to. With that little bit of tilt, I can get my legs a little straighter to slide them under the seat in front of me. On long flights, I'll pony up the $25 for an exit row or bulkhead seat. On international flights, I use my frequent flyer miles to upgrade to FC. You can be comfortable on any flight if you plan for it. And honestly, if someone behind me politely asked me to not recline, I would probably accommodate them.
