Jim Tressel resigns as Ohio State's football coach

By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer – 1 min ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jim Tressel, who guided Ohio State to its first national title in 34 years, resigned Monday amid NCAA violations and mounting revelations that sullied the image of one of the nation's top football programs.

In a statement released by the university, Tressel said, "After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach. The appreciation that (wife) Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."

Luke Fickell will be the coach for the 2011 season. He already had been selected to be the interim head coach while Tressel served a five-game suspension.

Tressel's downfall came with public and media pressure mounting on Ohio State, its board of trustees, President E. Gordon Gee and athletic director Gene Smith.

Exactly! OSU is not going to hire a new head coach until after the season according to the Columbus Dispatch.

From the Dispatch:

Luke Fickell, who had been named to coach the first five games of the season while Tressel served his suspension for withholding information from the university compliance office and the NCAA, will serve as interim coach of the Buckeyes all of next season

The article from the dispatch said he was in Florida and flew back to meet with his players this morning. Something big is going down because the President is the only one who can speak about this -- Tressel was forced out and you can take that to the bank. Players were told by the AD not discuss anything, AD won't discuss anything, Board of Regents won't talk although one of them leaked to the Dispatch the email from the President. The Committee appointed to look into this must have discovered a lot since they are now saying Tressel knew the players were ineligible for the whole year and played them anyway.

Re: Sweater vest resigns and tOSU troubles

Now is your chance! Just like the Big 12 did to Texas during the football season and the Pac 10 did to USC for the past few seasons, let all of your pent up rage and angst from constantly having no shot at the Big Ten, the BCS or the Rose Bowl flow out all at once this season.

Sure, some of you can claim shares of conference titles and may have pulled off a win over your big brother once in awhile, but we all know who the big brother of these conferences were and who got to call of the shots most of the time. Time for little brother to outgrow big brother.

You, too, can keep your conference's owner and operator out of the postseason! Just look at Texas and USC!

Tressel knew the players were ineligible for the whole year and played them anyway.

The Big Ten had a three-way tie for the conference.

http://i53.tinypic.com/uy45u.png

Bucky beat Nuteye, Sparty beat Bucky, all three had identical conference records.

Remove Nuteye from the equation, they don't get a BCS berth, and Sparty gets the Rose Bowl nod over Bucky by virtue of head-to-head.

You have to feel bad for Michigan State just a little. They also hate the Domers and seem to get screwed a lot by their Big Ten superiors.

Yes, Tressel's only crystal football was sponsored by Circuit City, the now-bankrupted chain. They failed to find a buyer in 2009 so they are now defunct after 50 years in business.

Let's not blame the flailing economy, competition from Best Buy or Obama. Let's blame the sweater vest for this too! :D

Both tOSU and Meatchicken will be with new coaches this season. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

I know Nebbish is the trendy pick for the Big Ten now, but it is such an open field that I'd almost go with Michigan State now, crude drawing aside.

What if Herbie is right and the buckeyes win a lot, 10 or 11 games? Over at West Virginia, they made a perennial assistant the head coach on the basis of a team and an offensive scheme, not of his making, winning one game and have since decided they might have been a little rash jumping on that bandwagon. The questions that come to mind now include:

Should they go after Urban Meyer now, let him transition in as a consultant and install him as head coach at the first sign of Feckell's fail or at least following bowl season so he can hit the recruiting trail up to speed on what tOSU wants/needs?

What if there is a groundswell of support for a successful Feckell, do they keep him as their head coach (despite saying he is only the 2011 interim HC)?

Even if they go after a high profile name (Meyer, Saban, Bob Stoops) would the climate of entitlement encouraged by Tressel be considered a red flag to coaches already at the pinnacle of their profession to accepting one of the top jobs in college football?

Is there a hot young coach they would court (Neuheisel, please don't apply) such as Petersen?

Throw caution and common sense to the wind and hire Mike Leach?

Will someone tell me how Herbstredt and other former Ohio State players can say they are not disappointed in Tressel and what he did? Would like to know who the Big 12 coach was that said if they had lied to the NCAA, they would have been fired. My bet it is Bob Steeps.

The homers for Ohio State are unbelieveable -- Tressel played ineligible players the whole year and knew it, lied to the NCAA, and the Ohio State people act like it is no big deal. As a former resident of Ohio, I hope they throw the book at Ohio State. From the day the NCAA looked the other way on Clarrett along with Tressel, is the day I stopped rooting for them. I rooted for Miami against OSU because of Clarrett. Now Tressel got the NCAA to allow those players to play in the Sugar Bowl. Have to admit that his getting them to sign letters they were coming back means she should have gone pro because no way they ever play another down for Ohio.

OSU President and Athletic Director need to resign for their part in all of this -- Tressel should have been gone when they found out he lied to the NCAA but for months those two have been defending him at every turn. Time for OSU to lose the "The" because they are cheaters from the word go as more and more former players come out.

The care deal must be about to hit. Bomar's ethics that got OU in trouble are about to look very small with what looks to be coming from OSU. Maybe now the NCAA will treat all schools the same instead of putting USC and Ohio State on a pedestal. Was told a short time ago the NCAA is going back since Tressel has been there which should highlight how they have tutors and the athletes take their exams with the tutors like Clarrett who actually took his verbally.

My more than two cents! Couldn't happen to a more arrogant program than OSU.

badger
5/30/2011, 02:48 PM
The problem - and I am pretty sure this is why coaches like Stoops keep their program clean and take care of problems immediately - is that when you have a culture of players feeling entitled to money for playing football, they'll leave for the NFL asap. If players feel above the NCAA rules, they may also feel above the coach's team rules and the laws of the land. If players don't take education seriously, they won't believe an education is a fair trade for playing sports, that education is important and knowledge is a necessity in life. As one former Auburn player told HBO, he's struggling now because he didn't get an education in school, but instead got booster money and now has no pro football career... and no degree.

The other side of that is that when players come to depend on fast money and easy coursework, it is difficult to leave tOSU. Maurice Clarett said that when he complained about not getting to fly home for a friend's funeral publicly, the booster money train stopped, as did the academic advising to steer him toward easy, stay-eligible coursework. Easy coursework is often non-transferable to other institutions, so it would be difficult to be eligible immediately at another school with courses such as a football coaching class by Tressel, or course credit for playing football, or independent study classes that can be completed in the final two weeks of the semester.

They were disappointed in Tressel. On TV yesterday, he was just very supportive of the fact that he thought Ohio State was going to win 10 or 11 gamesd next year. Which is utterly ridiculous.

I don't think it's an expert's opinion there, but rather, a supporter of the program trying to give the players and coaches a vote of confidence, a ray of hope, etc. etc. Remember when Lou Holtz said that Notre Dame would win like 12 games or so after they went like 1-11 or so? Same principle. Lou probably had no doubt that they'd struggle to be bowl eligible. He's been in the sport too long not to know better.

When Coach Stoops won it in 2000, it was The SEARS Trophy

Yes, Tressel's only crystal football was sponsored by Circuit City, the now-bankrupted chain. They failed to find a buyer in 2009 so they are now defunct after 50 years in business.

Let's not blame the flailing economy, competition from Best Buy or Obama. Let's blame the sweater vest for this too! :D

Exactly! OSU is not going to hire a new head coach until after the season according to the Columbus Dispatch.

From the Dispatch:

Luke Fickell, who had been named to coach the first five games of the season while Tressel served his suspension for withholding information from the university compliance office and the NCAA, will serve as interim coach of the Buckeyes all of next season

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/sports/stories/2011/05/30/ohio-state-news.html?sid=101

At work today there was talk of possible sanctions. Forfeitting games. There will be no new coach until after the sanctions, if it comes to that.

And to think how Maurice Clarett was the first big red flag there, and Tressel did nothing but throw Clarett under the bus as fast as he could. That was Tressel and the NCAA's perfect opportunity to do a little investigating and house cleaning, but they ignored it all in the name of winning. They are all cheating, conniving scum! Hope Tressel gets banned from coaching at any level till he's an old man, and that tOSU gets the book thrown at them!

Tressel started at OSU with his corrupt ways when he worked for Earle Bruce and rigged the drawings so certain players would win. At Youngstown State he not only looked the other way with "I didn't know" but when it got to court, it would come out he did know. Then OSU hires him knowing his background and touts him as some ethical coach when he has never been ethical. OSU Administration and AD need to follow Tressel out the door along with the Compliance people who not only looked the other way but steered athletes and their families to a certain car salesman.

Tressel took it to a new low level after he took over. Clarrett never should have been allowed to take part in that Championship game when he did not have the grades and cheated on exams taking them orally which was a bunch of you know what. Clarrett turned on Tressel a long time ago but he became the bad guy when in fact he had the goods on him but because OSU kept beating Michigan, the OSU people gave Tressel a pass. If he had been losing to Michigan, he would have been gone a long time ago.

Stopped rooting for OSU when they hired Tressel and will never root for them again.

As for Herbstredt, he defended Tressel for months when he had to know what was going on at OSU since most of the former players did but like I said beat Michigan and all is forgiven. As close as he has been to the program, he didn't notice what was going on with new cars from kids who cannot afford to buy shoes. It was all over campus about the cars.

What a poster on Shaggybevo had to say about Tressel last year:

I also don't buy much of talk about Ohio State. I know about the Troy Smith stuff and the Jorts are about the most insufferable fans outside of collie station, but Tressel is Mack Brown with a sweatervest. I have no data to back me up, but I would be willing to be he runs a fairly clean ship. Now what some of their idiot boosters might be doing is another thing.

Fail.

I'll just repost my opinion from a previous thread:

My opinion was already greaseball just because of his actions at Youngstown State. He became gutter slime after the way he handled the Clarett deal - not saying the kid didn't have his own issues but Tressel used him for a title then acted like he'd barely known the kid after (allegedly) facilitating most of the donor deals as he was recruiting him in Youngstown.

5 games isn't enough. He needs slapped with a permanent ban. Let him go coach in the UFL.

Learning of his activities while an assistant only increases my contempt.

A few months ago people in cbus said Tre$$ did a great thing by letting the players play in the sugar bowl by making them promise they would come back (basically extorting them)... Nobody would bet me though when I said they wouldn't all keep the promise...I hope he stays and causes more problems...

Very well said. I already didn't like him after Youngstown State but after reading he rigged the raffles, he was one big con job and because he beat Michigan everyone looked the other way. I am so happy that he finally got caught after all these years of breaking the rules but he was never the one at fault. Being a former Buckeye fan and having to listen to family when we were back there, I am loving every minute of this. Finally OSU got caught.

There's no way Terrelle Pryor is playing fb in Columbus this year.

At least now we know why TP so readily agreed he would stay at tosu. There were jokes about Reggie Bush taking a pay cut by leaving USC but he was the number 2 pick in the draft. TP really would have taken a pay cut by leaving tosu.

Not sure why people would think Stoops would take the job.

Yes, he grew up in Ohio, but he did not play at Ohio State, so he wouldn't be going to his Alma Mater. Also, Ohio State is a lateral move at best.

How is it ridiculous? Tressel, from my understanding, is the only coach gone. This means the position coaches and coordinators are all the same still...or did I miss something?

Will Tressel be missed? Maybe a little, but I would not be at all surprised if Ohio State puts 9, 10, or 11 wins together this season. However, I would not be surprised if OSU wins less than 9 games as well. It will go as the players want it too. Will they buy into the system with Tressel out of the picture? Or will they hang their heads knowing their coach that rarely disciplined his players for any mistake is gone?

Well, if he does go...at least he got to play the entire season and bowl game knowing he was ineligible and had the graces of the NCAA to do so without punishment.

I bet, if he jumps and renegs on his promise, OSU gets the book thrown at them for this!

So, lets only hope he does leave and does not fulfill his promise that he returns!

There have been reports of the players that sold memorabilia and then promised Tressel that they would stay have tried to get off the sinking ship that is THE Ohio State University. All of those players are tOSU's top players and are contemplating trying for the supplemental draft. These players won't follow Fickel and especially won't be excited enough to win 11 games especially now that the NCAA just keeps finding more and more information on them and how they know they won't be playing for anything for years to come. The hearing is August 12, and after that these players will be in the dumps.
