brand new, freshly built and paved. how long does it last if it is never maintained? how long before it becomes completely impassable?

5 years? 10?

Reminds me of that Chris rock bit..."Aint no money in the cure. You mean to tell me they can build a space shuttle that goes through the atmosphere but not an El Dorado where the bumper dont fall off!"

What are we driving? A Jeep Rubicon or a Prius?

Truck traffic is the key. 80,000 lbs takes a much bigger toll than 3,000.

I will never bitch about Oklahoma roads. Here in Flagstaff we have daily freeze/thaw/ice cycles. We get potholes bigger than a whorn ego.

If we built them correctly probably 50-60 years. The way we actually build them most of them aren't very good the day they are done.

I wouldn't know, never seen them complete any road construction, haven't they been working on I-35 since the Truman administration?

If they are fixed then they don't get money budgeted towards them the next year therefore it pays to have them lousy on publicly funded roads. Take a look at the turnpike and how fast it was built. It's not just a coincidence.

Private sector > Public sector.

I also agree with Del. The heavy trucks do damage to the roads/ highways. Here in PB county the trucks are required when not exiting to stay in the center lane.

What kind of asphalt is it where it comes in basically gravel sized rocks, but after being drove on for a few months it's as smooth as can be? We have that stuff on a highway out here and it's been at least 10 years and it looks and rides brand new

Depends on whether its asphalt or concrete and the amount of travel on it.

Not sure you need to go to Tech School to tell the difference between gravel and asphalt. You do need to have your eyes open and posses at least two functioning brain cells.
