Dylan insists the song was never about drugs, but rather the search for inspiration. He claims the title character of Mr. Tambourine Man was actually inspired by musician Bruce Langhorne, who played a large Turkish tambourine during many of Dylan’s previous recording sessions.

Dork me. Barbs as in barbituates. Got it. :-/ I don't care. The instramental music behind the lyrics is what's amazing to me.
