I know a number of gay people who do not speak with a lisp.

What specific group are you hanging out with?

*"hanging out" is what one might call a double entendre

I think I speak with a lower voice because of growing up with an older brother, so I was always trying to sound older and more like him :D

I think it's the same reason people end up with accents that aren't from their region of the globe -- because they're emulating people they admire or want to be like.

I can't say that I've spoken to a real life homosexual with a lisp.

I speak with a low voice as well, but I don't attribute it to my brothers--whom I really had no desire to emulate.

Some do, some don't. I used to think the more flaming ones spoke with a lisp. I've since learned that not to be the case.

On a related subject, is it possible for a very effeminate man, one who has feminine speech, mannerisms, appearance, interests, to actually be totally straight? There is a co-worker who fits this bill. He even carries his books and papers like a girl. But he is married and has kids. Many think he is really closeted, but over all these years, there has never been any convincing evidence he is gay.

Actually, it is usually straight guys, who have the lisp while trying to imitate gays.

I had a friend in college that told me that plenty of frat boys would come to his apartment on the weekends to "imitate gays."

I don't speak with a lisp. Instead, people say that I speak from the back of my throat. I guess that I deep throat my words.

What is really weird is that I sound extra super fey when I speak Chinese. I can't even say "fornicate your mother" in the Gwangdong dialect without causing people to double over in laughter.

When I speak Thai, it just comes out as brash ugly American trying to speak Thai. It is an insult to the language and hurts my ears but at least it is not too fey.
