Report: ND paying Charlie Weis until '15

Notre Dame sent former football coach Charlie Weis packing in November 2009 after five seasons and a lackluster 35-27 record, cutting short the final six years of the 10-year extension he signed during his stellar first season on the job.

But apparently the break wasn't quite so clean. Notre Dame will continue to pay him through 2015, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Notre Dame initially gave Weis a "termination payment" totaling more than $6.6 million, but is still on the hook for "much smaller annual payments through December 2015" according to university tax documents reviewed by the Tribune.

The amount of the annual payments wasn't disclosed, but Weis should be able to get by just fine. He signed a three-year deal worth $2.495 million to be Will Muschamp's offensive coordinator at Florida.

So there isn't a clause in the contract that says "If you get fired, we don't have to pay you for eight more years"?

That NBC contract must be really good.

People wonder why the Irish havn't been any good in forever. They have morons in charge signing coaches to ten year extensions after ONE season.

It should read:

Report: Hiring Weis cost Irish $16M and counting and was another stupid hire in a long list of stupid hires.

It's not the guarantee or the extension, it's the fact that they hired him in the first place. They paid him a ****-ton of money and he had no clue what he was doing as a college coach. He had basically zero experience as a college coach at any level.

Weis the Walrus timeline:

2004: Domer hires Charlie, their second choice behind Urban Meyer, who went to Florida. Contract is $2 mil per for six years. Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1943710)

2005: After seven games, Charlie convinces ND that losing to USC (on the infamous "Bush Push" play) and a 5-2 record is enough to re-up. The new, 10-year deal, is worth between $30 mil and $40 mil (remember that ND is a private school) and will keep Charlie under contract until 2015. Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2207478)

2006: A 10-2 season and the signing of top recruit Jimmy Clausen (among a "top 10 recruiting class") means that nothing bad can happen, right?

2007: Another top recruiting class... oh yeah, and a 3-9 season :D

2008: An un-Domer-like season, where they actually win a bowl game and only win 7 games total. Another "top recruiting class" is signed.

2009: Like 2008, had a 6-6 regular season, which caused Charlie to finally get fired. Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4700891)

Notable Charlie Weis quotes during his ND years:

“Michigan St will never beat Notre Dame again under my watch.”

(they lose to Meatchicken State again in 07 and 08)

“I’ve never lost to Pete Carroll and I’m not gonna start now.”

“No one will want a piece of us in 2009.”

“I told the guys instead of whining about the coaching change, go look in the mirror and realize you went 5-7 and 6-6. If you want to get rid of me just go 5-7 and 6-6 the next two years and get another coach in here.”

“Since the first day I arrived at Notre Dame as head football coach, one of my primary goals was to be able to see this job through to the time my son, Charlie, would graduate from the University of Notre Dame and to stay in this position until I retire. By restructuring this contract, adding an additional five years, this allows me to accomplish that goal.”

I think Weis taught colleges that any combination (or all) of the following: Quality losses against big opponents, being an alumnus of the place employing you, winning a Super Bowl as a coordinator, having highly ranked recruiting classes, feel good off-field stories, etc. etc. None of these will lead to consistent winning.
