SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — A 45-year-old man now living in the Bay Area may be the first person ever cured of the deadly disease AIDS, the result of the discovery of an apparent HIV immunity gene.

If you believe he's cured....

Would you want a blood transfusion from him?

i could have sworn there was a guy in england whose immune system was actually able to fight it off.

but hey, if this guy helps bring about the end the the black plague of the modern era, a huge thank you is in order to all those involved in finding this gene.

It's not just black people that get it.

Actually there was another cured person I think in 07 involving a Brazilian man and a bone marrow transplant. 2nd I've heard of, good news for people.

When you say cure....I think you mean they saved his life.

The cure is when nobody on Earth is infected.

Heard the average life expectancy for a new HIV patient is 32 years... just 15-20 years ago it was <5

magic sure has a tough immune system... being diagnosed in 1990 and all...

Reminds me of that episode of South Park with Magic Johnson.

I actually remember reading about this guy back in 2009. Crazy.

They just released a study that showed that an HIV positive person is dramatically less contagious if taking anti-retroviral drugs. This should lead to people beginning this regiment long before they normally would.

Because this could be used as a method to reverse the spread of the disease, I wonder if the international community wouldn't be best served by ponying up the money to use this as a tactic to slowly weed out the disease. (In the long run this would be the most cost effective solution.)

The key is to identify those with the disease which is tricky. But, if we could and start them on medications early (which reduces the probability of transmission by orders of magnitude) we could begin an exponential decline in new cases instead of an exponential growth.

it would help if some of the people in Africa weren't ****ing savages

I've known a cure for years. Don't let another man put it in your rear end and you'll be straight. (no pun intended)
