Hey when did Harden become OKC's elite player?

I think he's making a challenge to that tall chick with the beard on the mavs?

silverwheels
5/19/2011, 10:20 PM
He has all the tools to be that kind of player. Look at Dirk's work ethic. That's what Harden needs.

Yeah, and I think it was a confidence thing for him, too, but he has really stepped it up since the All-Star Game. Can't wait to see how much he has improved next year, along with Ibaka.

Man I couldn't be prouder of the Thunder going down to Dallas and winning this game. Honestly it doesn't look like the Mavs are pushing the Thunder as hard as the Grizzlies did. They have so much more talent and experience I expected the Mavs to really whip up on the Thunder.

Either the Thunder is a bit better than I thought they were or the Mavs aren't as good as I thought they were. No matter I am thrilled it is 1-1 after two with the next two games in OKC.

Hopefully we go back to Dallas with the series at 3-1 with the Thunder on top.

I disagree. Brooks left the bench, not just Maynor, in for wayyyy longer than he normally does. It was not a RW thing, it was a bench/starters thing. Loved the decision to stick with the guys that got the team up big. Freaking loved it. First time I have ever seen that, especially in a playoff game. Westbrook and Brooks probably clash more often then we think, and he sits him for the first time for the 4th quarter in game 2 of the Western Conference Finals? I find that hard to believe.

Mavs' got bench slapped last night.

And that was a little ballsy of Brooks to leave his bench in in the 4th and sit Westbrook. But his players rewarded his faith.

Meanwhile, Jason Terry went 0 for 4 in the 4th.

There's your game.

And I find it more than disconcerting to hear several Mavs say the Thunder wanted it more. They're correct, mind you. OKC deserved to win.

But if you're the Mavs who have gone through 2006, and the one and done's in 2007, 2008, and 2010, no opponent you play should be hungrier than you are.

That all having been said, I'm not worried about this series just yet.

I said Dallas in 6 at the start and wouldn't have been surprised in the least to see OKC take one of the first two games in Dallas. The Mavs are fully capable of taking at least one in OKC and I expect this series to come back to Dallas tied 2-2.

But the defense still has to improve.

colleyvillesooner
5/20/2011, 12:37 PM

Dirk scored 16 points in the 4th quarter and was the only reason why the Mavs were within 10 at the end of the game. I can't stand the Mavs or Dirk, but the guy is an outstanding closer and I feared the worst last night as he kept scoring in the 4th quarter. He still can't play a lick of defense though.

GrapevineSooner

In the Dirk era, the Mavs have been tied at 1-1 nine times. The winner of Game 3 in EVERY SERIES went on to win the series.

2002 2nd round: Lost to Sacramento (lost series in 5)
2003 2nd round: Beat Sacramento in double OT (won series in 7)
2003 WCF: Lost to San Antonio (lost series in 6)
2005 2nd round: Lost to Phoenix (lost series in 6)
2006 2nd round: Beat San Antonio (won series in 7)
2006 WCF: Beat Phoenix (won series in 6)
2007 1st round: Lost to Golden State (lost series in 6)
2009 1st round: Beat San Antonio (won series in 5)
2010 1st round: Lost to San Antonio (lost series in 6)

And as you can see, Dallas is 4-5, having alternated Game 3 wins and losses in every series since 2007.

So you are saying that tonight is important, Grapevine?

If history's any indication. ;)

Also, I checked Whowins.com. They say that when a series is tied 1-1 irrespective of who has HCA or what round it is, the winner of Game 3 goes on to win the series 82.2% of the time.

The team that started the series with HCA went on to win the series 75% of the time while teams that stole HCA in one of the first two games and held serve in Game 3 went on to win the series 2/3 of the time (.667)

So yeah, it's a big game. That having been said, we all know OKC bucked that trend last round against Memphis.

And I'm a little nervous as well. Not as nervous as OU-Texas weekend because unlike the Horns, I don't hate you guys. :D

I'm not in the least bit surprised by the outcome so far..........Throughout the playoffs, we've lived off our athleticism and jump shots. When we're hot, we're unstoppable. When we get our fast breaks in, we're unstoppable. When KD has a bad night like tonight, we seem to go into panic mode and take more jump shots. This I have to fault Scotty Brooks on. We need to run more plays. I absolutely love the ball movement from Dallas. Everytime Dallas gets down the court, it seems all 5 guys touch the basketball, with them getting the ball down low. We need that, especially when the jump shots that we live off of are not falling in........

Sorry, you're off the mark here by a long shot. RW dialed it back this game TOO much. He was too sensitive to the criticism. For a while in the game he was the only offense we had. No, we were never really in the game but it had nothing to do with Westbrook.

Nice game. 3s were obviously the difference.

Lack of plays was the difference. Dallas was just too tired at the end, they're old. We have no offense. Its drive down the court with Westbrook, look around, possibly pass or shoot, or pass it to KD. If they hit it, great. If it misses but Collison tips it in, great. If Harden gets the rock and drains a 3, great. However, like tonight, if we start out cold with our jumpshots, we have no answer. We have no plays. Dallas was picking and rolling all night......I can't recall seeing us one time picking and rolling. And the refs were horrible. We got lucky, Dallas should have received way more calls.

The Thunder are still the NBA's highest scoring team in the playoffs. Not really fair to say they have no offense.

They just got off to a horrible start offensively and couldn't drain their shots from beyond the arc.

Monday night could be a completely different story. You just never know.

As for the officiating...Let's just say I think Nick Collison did an outstanding job adjusting to it in his defense on Dirk. :D

I disagree. At one time during the 4th, I watched Westbrook dribble down the court with his eyes solely on the basket. Harden was wide open, throwing his arms up.........Westbrook never even looked his way and ended up driving for the layup only to miss it. I'm sorry man, that's a problem. Another time after this, I saw Harden just standing there and not doing anything. He stood there and watched Westbrook take it to the hoop. His body language clearly showed that he knew he what was going to happen with Westbrook driving down the lane. That's why Dallas will probably pull this out. We lack ball movement in my opinion...Westbrook had 7 turnovers.

Big win for the Mavs...doesn't matter if it was by 6 or by 16. I was sure the Thunder would make a run, but I think the biggest key was that the Mavs were able to trade buckets those first 4 minutes or so of the 4th quarter. Dirk hit some big shots and Terry had that big jumper of the pick and roll to run the clock down to where the Thunder had no choice but to foul.

MVP of the game for the Mavs had to be Marion. He was great on both ends of the floor tonight. I think all of his points were in the paint, and he did a nice job on Durant.

Would not have thought if you told me before the game that if Dirk went 7-21 and Terry went 3-12, that the Mavs would have even had a chance of winning this game, but they found a way to win and that's all that matters.

Oh and congrats to Harden on his flop. It was World Cup quality.

Man you Thunder fans are such hypocrits. In game 1 Dallas shot 7 less free throws than the Thunder but because Dirk had 24 by himself (even though Durant and Westbrook each had 18) you guys whined and moaned saying the officials were screwing OKC which is just ignorant to say. Now this game OKC shoots 36 free throws to Dallas' 18 and as one of you say, "its because the thunder are playing a great defense." Thats hilarious. See the end result though? I think the Thunder comes into home games in these situations thinking the crowd will buoy them to a win. The effort was just embarrassing, except Westbrook, ironically.

I'm okay with leaving Sefolosha in there, but Brooks: if you're gonna stick with Perkins, how bout developing a post-up shot or two? I think Mohammed should be seeing as many (if not MORE) minutes against Dallas as Perkins is getting.

I don't disagree with the last part. I caught the Mavs post game show on The Ticket last night and Donovan Lewis made it a point to talk about how "meh" Perkins game has been in this series.

On Boston, he fit because they had Kevin Garnett down in the post as an offensive threat. But he's black hole offensively.

So much so that I remember in Game 1 or 2, the Mavs collapsed 3 guys on him and I yelled at the TV for doing it.

I thought Mohammed gave the Thunder some good energy against Memphis last round and I'm surprised Brooks hasn't gone to him. I guess he's valuing that veteran experience from Perkins, but it's not like Mohammed is lacking in that department.

Afterall, he did play on one of those Spurs championship teams in '05 if I'm not mistaken.

I'm befuddled as to why we don't start Collison or Mohammed. I think Brooks needs to step back for a minute and remember how effective Collison & Ibaka were together. The complete lack of post-up offense is why teams are figuring out they can sell out defensively on the perimeter against the Thunder and get away with it.

And please convince me that the Thunder would not be a better team with a much less selfish pg like jason kidd or chris paul or a pg of that nature who could get the ball to durant and harden on a steady basis, you know, the guys who actually have offensive talent. Westbrook is probably my favorite player on the Thunder and might have the most upside, but until he learns to play with a team he will only bring them down. Hes young and will get better with time, especially if brooks gets through to him. Id love to intelligently debate this with you but im sure youll only embarrass yourself, you probably only started following basketball 3 years ago when the Sonics came to OKC.

Oh ye grizzled basketball-watching veteran: If Westbrook brings the Thunder down, please explain how he's led this team of 21 and 22 year olds on a supremely improbable run to the conference finals, with zero low-post scoring to help. I'll listen intently off the air.

You lump all Thunder fans together, and then this. I bet you're the football fan who fixates on the QB when the team loses, because you don't recognize the WR's arent getting open and the OL isn't blocking.

Based on your posts, you probably only started following basketball (and other team sports) 3 weeks ago.

Ben and Skin here in Dallas had Berry Tramel on and one of them pointed out that if you take Westbook's baskets out of the equation, OKC's FG percentage drops from 36% to 21%.

So there goes your theory.

Also, don't be afraid to mix in a paragraph or two in your posts.

Well I seem to have ruffled some feathers. Listen, you all know what I am saying is true you just dont want to admit it. Westbrooks play is killing the Thunder right now. I will stop with the Thunder bashing because I do like them a lot and they are going to be a force the the next decade.

I will say though, if Westbrook hits his 15ft jumper, that he usually misses 6 seconds into the shot clock with wide open shooters on both wings, then he is unstoppable combined with his ability to drive the ball to the basket. Ive yet to see that in this series though and so have all of you so continue to tell me im crazy but what im saying isnt bashing its observation. They would be unstoppable with a more unselfish pg who played to his strengths. Im not saying Westbrook cant be that guy, but right now he isnt being that guy.

Oh and I cant stand Skip Bayless, total moron. ;)

Link it or its just more babble from sports radio. Actually just looking at other players shooting % right now its easy to see thats a made up stat. Westbrook is shooting a worse percentage in the playoffs than any of the 5 starters and Harden on the bench. Nice try though.

That's what you get for listening to Ben and Skin. I cant make the math work that way when I look at it. I tried a couple different ways too. Take out Westbrook and it goes from 36 to 35. He was only 8-20.
This was only looking at game 3.

You cant make the math work because its a made up stat. Westbrook is shooting 4 % points less than the next lowest fg % from a starter and harden. Theres no way that stat is right, they probably just said it in blind defense of Westbrook like all the Thunder fans on here.

That's the weird thing, they are Dallas Radio and huge Mavs fans, so it wasn't in blind defense of Westbrook.
