A man has committed suicide by jumping from the world's tallest skyscraper in Dubai, according to its owner.

The man, in his 20s, fell from the 147th floor of the 2,717ft (828m) Burj Khalifa, landing on a deck on the 108th floor, local media reported.

When I saw this story, I thought "What a @#!$ing loser! He can't even make it to the ground".

It must a been a huge bummer for the guy. He jumps and them immediately realizes "Crap, I'm gonna hit the ledge....man I suck".

It was an Indian

CHENNAI: A 38-year-old man from Sivaganga district allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, in Dubai (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Dubai) on Tuesday. The Indian consulate in Dubai said Athiraman Kannan was employed as a cleaner with Arabtec, a construction company.

Sources said Kannan committed suicide after he was refused leave by his supervisor. Police said he hurled himself from an air vent on the 147th floor of the 2,717ft building at 9am. He struck metal barriers before landing on the terrace of the 108th floor.

His death is the first recorded suicide at the building since it was completed last year.

Emaar Properties, the developer of the tower, said the incident occurred in the morning. "Around 9am, an incident involving a male was reported at the Burj Khalifa (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Burj-Khalifa) site. The concerned authorities have confirmed that it was a suicide, and we are awaiting the final report," it said in a statement. Emaar said floors 45 to 108 were private residences, with most of the remaining floors used as corporate suites.

What you might not realize is in that part of the world and for import labor like these guys, they sign a contract for 2 years and the employer confiscates their passport to prevent any of the laborers from leaving early or fulfilling their contracts. At the end of 2 years, they get a vacation, usually a month and then many go back to the M.E. for another 2 years or they quit while they are on leave home and don't return.

So this guy, likely could have had a family emergency and the employer would not let them leave. Common practice there.
