View Full Version : Tulsa Tougher Than They Look?

They may have a new head coach in Bill Blankenship, but they do have G. J. Kinne. They went 10-3 last year and beat Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl 62-35. Hawaii was a good team as well going 10-4, and Hawaii was favored heavily to win against Tulsa. Tulsa has won seven games in a row. I am not saying that they will be a national title contendor or anything, but we can't underestimate them or anyone else on that schedule.

What do you think will happen in this game? What is your prediction of their season?

You're right that Tulsa should get some respect when they take the field. This team should be a lot better than the 5-7, 2009 team that took a 45-0 thumping at Owen Field. With that being said, Tulsa won't be able to stay in the game long or keep their confidence once the ball doesn't bounce their way. They've been blown out by OU several times over the last decade, and they aren't going to beat a good OU team this season.

OU will win this one, but this is one of those games where the 1st Q is so important. TU will gameplan the whole preseason for this game and will have nothing to lose. If OU has a brainfart like they did against Utah St, it will be uncomfortably close. TU will brag about the close loss the rest of the season, as will the sportswriters and the World Picker.

Can't have that...

Since you mentioned it if we do have a brainfart against tulsa like we had against utah state then we'll lose b/c tulsa is a better team than utah state. That being said, I think this team comes out focused and hopefully Huepel doesn't pull a KW in the opening game and only call conservative plays b/c he doesn't want to show anything. Everything we have is on some tape somewhere anyway so hiding (pretending to anyway) plays at this point is silly.

Have you paid any attention to Tulsa's defense? We'll hang half a hundred on them.

Tulsa will have the same problem they've always had when facing high level opposition: they will get dominated in the box. While Tulsa can and has amassed some very solid talent at the skill positions, they simply cannot compete with the big boys in recruiting when it comes to offensive and defensive linemen.

Tulsa is good, but we still win big. End of discussion.

Now there is something to hang your hat on. Our gangs are better/worse (?) than your gangs!

Someday a team will beat Bob Stoops at Owen Field again. The 2011 Tulsa Golden Hurricane is NOT that team.

Tulsa has talent and potential, but they are a team that will likely only be able to fire up for one signature, dream win this coming season... and I think they'd likely target Boise State or OSU for that sig win.

Sooners beware of another team that will likely try to make us their sig win this year though --- Iowa State. They've nailed Nebraska and Texas the past two years. On the road. Beware, beware, beware.

Are you saying no one in possibly fifteen years that comes to play at Owen Field will ever beat us in Bob Stoops' entire career again ever?

42 - 21

Close at the half.

All I'm saying is that if it happened in 1979, it can happen again!

That picture is from the Iowa game in 1979 which OU won 21-6. You have a point in that Bob Stoops, #41, lost that game. Really it wasn't Bobs fault it was Billy Sims credit all the way.

Very true. I guess no team will ever beat Bob Stoops at Owen Field then :P

Tulsa has to be better. They got rid of a good but crazy coach that the players hated and did not trust.

I heard they were going to bring back all of the players & coaches from last year and play in Stillwater again.

Just don't underestimate a team. It happens and then better teams lose to much worse ones.

Jacie

Conventional wisdom says last year will be a tough act to follow (10-3, a win over Notre Dame and that bowl game).

On the plus side they return most of the 2010 starters including senior quarterback, Kinne, the Conference USA POY.

But in 2011 they play three preseason Top 10 teams (@Oklahoma, Okie State and @Boise State) so you can expect three losses right there.

With that kind of nonconference schedule, if they go 8-5 this season it should be considered a success.

They can score some points...lets see how the D is that early in the season...

SoonerofAlabama
5/29/2011, 01:11 PM
From what I can see, their defense won't be very good next year, which makes it tougher for their offense. Again, GJ Kinne has talent, but he doesn't have enough around him at the moment. They might do pretty well next year once they figure some things out.

Coach Huepel is not a conservetive kind of play caller. I think he opens it up by throwing it down field a lot. Test their secondary and open the running game. We will have different backs in there and they won't have too much film on them. Tulsa's D not steller never has been. I watched Hawaii play a game last year and they were not really that good of a team. Not worried about Tulsa. More concerned with FSU. They will be tough I have no doubt. I see Huepel giving them all they can handle. Shovel pass anyone! :D

On paper, they're MUCH better than Utah State appeared to be. But, I think we improved just a little since that game. I know Landry Jones did.

SoonerofAlabama
5/31/2011, 08:48 AM
Again, their defense is terrible. If we jump ahead quickly their offense will fall apart under the pressure. We don't have to have an early start, but it could help.
