SOHO watched as a fairly bright comet dove towards the Sun in a white streak and was not seen again after its close encounter (May 10-11, 2011). The comet, probably part of the Kreutz family of comets, was discovered by amateur astronomer Sergey Shurpakov. In this coronagraph the Sun (represented by a white circle) is blocked by the red occulting disk so that the faint structures in the Sun's corona can be discerned. Interestingly, a coronal mass ejection blasted out to the right just as the comet is approaching the Sun.

Scientists, however, have yet to find a convincing physical connection between sun-grazing comets and coronal mass ejections. In fact, analysis of this CME using images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows that the CME erupted before the comet came close enough to the solar surface to interact with strong magnetic fields.

Interesting that their analysis indicates that the coronal mass ejection seen happened before the comet hit.

why is that interesting? what does it mean?

why is that interesting? what does it mean?

It means the apparent 'explosion' seen after the comet disappears was likely not due to the comet impact.

annnnnnnnnnnnd???

Ike

Because it looks in the video like the comet caused it. But that turns out not to be the case. Something else did...most likely to do with magnetic activity.

I don't know either. But, I guess that it was so bright because it was burning its tail off going down.

How does a comet, unless it is the size of a planet, even come close to the sun without vaporizing??

did someone force you to watch it? no. Seriously, if it doesn't interest you, don't post. Isn't that the advice people always give about politics?

I think he asked for an explanation. When somebody says something is interesting it shouldn't be out of line to ask "in what way?" It's not like he told him he was wrong.

My condolences, Kreutz family.

And I would kill for a coronal mass ejection. It has been weeks!

I thought there was nothing that could ever actually hit the sun because its too hot? This would be a post that should be directed towards Chuck Norris, he's hit it at least 3 times.

Why do you think the sun has solar flares? It's payback to Mr Norris.:D

I don't think you need a PhD to figure out why it is interesting. The initial impression is that the comet caused the ejection but other analysis shows that it was just coincidental. There's no general relativity or string theory required to get that.

oh its interesting - that much i get - but when somebody with Ike's credentials makes that comment - its much different than when i make it

to me its interesting because it's "cool"

to Ike - it's interesting for probably a more educated reason

i was simply asking for what he thought it meant.....

What I take from this thread is that Ike believes it was actually an alien starship that is hiding in the sun oberving us.

Because they can do that.

I could be wrong, but I'll bet the geeks at JPL are rolling on the floor laughing their asses off that anyone would think that a comet could cause a CME.

I'm not worried. We should have seen an advanced warning of doom by now if that were to be true. I would imagine a large earthquake somewhere in the Pacific and tornadoes and flooding in the southern USA would be required to get my attention.
