I think I am going to get me and the kids tablets this Summer. What type should I get? We have been running the iPhones the last few years and have been happy. I heard the Droid Honeycomb ones are better and are the future? Discuss what I should buy and why....

I recently purchased an IPAD2. I am really still getting the jist of using it. I am happy with to this point, it does everything I want/need it to do.

Depends on what I was going to do with it. If I were buying one for myself it would be an iPad with 3G

Id go with the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Honeycomb.

I have a Galaxy Tab 7" right now. I like it a whole lot more than the iPad I had.

This review says Honeycomb brings a Windows XP like experience to the tablet.

I'm not sure what the point of a tablet is anyway. I don't really see the point.

I have this awesome thing that's a tablet, but with a convenient foldout keyboard.

I'm with you. My laptap has a 17 inch widescreen plus thing like a disc drive for when there's not a latte or wifi to be had. I carry it with me everywhere. I can take it. I'm big and strong like that...

Yep. And being a writer, I don't much have a use for a computer without a keyboard.

I get it, I just haven't found that I really need one. If I didn't already have a smart phone I am happy with and a notebook that works well for me I would take a better look at one.

If I were to head out to buy one I think I would probably come home with an 11" MacBook Air. But for now a 13" Macbook Pro serves me well.

But really, I'm not trying to be argumentative--what is the point? What do you plan to use it for? What is the purpose of having a tablet rather than a laptop? I just don't understand their function.

Yeah, the new Galazy tab is 10". It is also the thinnest tablet on the market including the ipad.

The only issue really is that honeycomb is a little buggy at the moment but the latest update is supposed to fix that.

On the upside, you can do sooooo much more with Android. The platform is.completely open. I can throw whatever kind of file I want onto my tablet via bluetooth, wifi, or usb connection to my.comp. I can do anything wirelessly with any file type. iOS.is highly restricted. I just prefer the freedom to do what I want on my tablet and Apple does.not allow that freedom.

It depends on what you use the laptop for. If you do a lot of heavy duty computer work then you need a laptop not a tablet. I only used my laptop to check email, post here, take notes, etc. I can do all of that and more on a tablet and the user experience is better. I can carry around my tab easily in one hand all around the house. I can read ebooks anywhere I go or play thousands of games. I can take class notes.or scribble hand witten notes right on my screen and since it uses flash memory I dont have to worry about the hard drive.crashing.from moving around.

It isnt for everyone though. It just depends on what you need or want from a device.

I use my tablet for traveling and commuting. I have no desire to carry my laptop back and forth to work on the train, then the long walk to the office. My tablet fits into my small backpack, is light weight, and allows me to watch movies, TV programs, listen to music (it takes the place of my iPod), or read a book and it has a long battery life. Of course, I could do the same thing with my laptop and the iPad is just more convenient for me. Although, I do HATE not having Flash on the iPad.

Yeah, e-books are another thing I don't see a point for. I like paper. Likewise, if I'm going to hand-write notes, I'll use paper and a pen. I don't play games on my computer very often either. But also, those seem like things that a laptop would do just fine.

What does a tablet do that a laptop doesn't do?

sanantoniosooner
5/14/2011, 05:21 PM
pg.....I'm not a fan of e-readers, but if you can't see an advantage of a small device that holds thousands of books, with days of battery, and extremely light...I'm not sure there is a point in trying to explain any of this.

They all have pros and cons.

A tablet is instant on and off without having to boot up like a regular laptop.
A tablet is half the size and weight of any laptop.
A tablet has battery life that no laptop can touch.
For some people it will do everything they would do on a laptop while increasing portability and battery life.

If thats the case then you are definitely going to want a honeycomb tablet of some sort. They all have dual core processors which is good for that 3d modeling plus android can handle any file type out there.

synching is not necessary. Your computer will read it as a mass storage unit and you can drag and drop anything you want.

I do see the point of that. I mean, lightweight, portable, won't run out of batteries. I have something like that. It's called a book.

GHP has a Kindle, and it's cool, but I just don't want to read a book on it. Then again, I'm a person who refuses to buy mp3 albums. I still buy CDs (sometimes LPs even).

My laptop has an instant on/off functin with no bootup time--I never use it. My laptop doesn't weigh very much to begin with, and the keyboard and screen are already as small as they can be and still be functional, as far as I'm concerned. My battery lasts at least six hours, and I can't think of a situation i'd need my laptop to last longer than that without outlet access. And it's pretty darn portable. I mean, I used to carry books around with me everywhere I went anyway. This is the size of two books, basically. or actually, it's the size of a notepad, which I frequently carry around with me also. I take my laptop to lunch with me every day, and I carry it around the house wherever I need it.

I guess I understand the argument for a tablet, but it doesn't seem very logical for my purposes. It sounds like a laptop but with fewer uses, IMO. I would never waste my money.

I travel often and I hate the hassle of the laptop just for email and message boards!!!!

I don't often use message boards when I'm traveling. I do, however, write a lot when I'm traveling, for which my laptop is perfect. I wouldn't be able to do that on a tablet with no keyboard.

that tablet isn't booting, it's just turning the screen off like a smart phone does. I can put my laptop into sleep mode and have it wake from in just a few seconds. Actually that tablet probably takes a lot longer to boot then you realize, if you ever actually had to boot it (other then turning it off for an airplane).

I've considered a kindle, but I also prefer books. I can see the pro's of having an e-reader though.

Personally, I'm getting kinda fracking tired of the "always on, always in contact, e-mail, tweeter, facebook, blah blah blah" **** we live with. My phone is always in silent mode, I don't even opne outlook to answer personal e-mail but once a week, even if I see something I should reply to on my phone.

I haven't found a need for one myself but I like the idea of them a great deal. I have looked at most of them and for the intended purposes they are all chasing the iPad IMO. Of course I think iPhone has little competition (maybe more than the iPad) in that segment as well.

The Android devices I have been around don't work very well but are more customizable from what their owners tell me. I do think most people that have Android devices like them however.

If the iPad had phone capabilities built in I would probably already have one.
